It's getting Scary
Well as I said in my other post hubbies work has made all employees take one day a month unpaid day off. The Employee does not get to choose the day either. They have quit providing coffee at work for the employee. I talked to my hubbie today at lunch and he said that they have turned off the ac in the building and are making the employees get rid of all electrical things like radios, microwaves and personal frig's, my hubby has a plug in on his snap on tool box that he has thses things plugged in. The frig and micro wave is not his but the guys at work us his plug to have thses conveniant for there lunch break. There is just no work right now. My hubby is a diesel mechanic for Whayne Cat. He works on construction equipment. I see things getting a lot worse still before it gets better. I think within a month or two they will be down to 4 days a week. And then with winter comming before long thats there slow time anyways. It's just kind of scary.I thought things were suppose to be getting better. I think all this stuff about the reccession being over is a bunch of crap.

you said it right at the end. it is not over. companies that are trying to hang on are still feeling the effects of a bad economy. and it is not close from being over just from the ripple effect that has been created.
Tony's company did this:
lay off every other week.
work one, lay off next (which was good, he got at least his medical/dental etc. paid in that work week)
Then they went to 1 month on layoff and back to work every other week.....then layoff permanent for 3-4 mos. and then back to rotational layoff. now he is back full time wtih mandatory overtime each week to catch back up (?)---LOL
start thinking layoff. bank up that money for emergencies and go into action mode just like you were in lay off right now. can't hurt, and might help ya alot when needed.
take care

Sorry you are going through this. I hope he doesn't get a perm layoff.
They did say that they anticipated the UI to go higher. My area is already knocking on the door of 10%. That is really scary with winter and the holidays coming up. Our crime has increased too and it ISN'T all due to meth.

My dh is unemployed right now. It is hard...I know what you are feeling. I don't think the recession is nearing and end either. Save what you can now. Thankfully we had saved.

Hang in there! I don't think it is over either. Hubby works for UPS (as of last Feb)a very stable company right? Even they have closed zones

We are planning just in case for storm clouds on the horizon even though he is assured all is ok.. Karens advice is terrific. We survived a lay off from OCT to FEB doing just as she says.Last edited by nodmicks; 08-03-2009 at 06:27 PM.

Crime in our area seams to be going up to. My hubby knows the guy that is manager over our TSC and was in there talking to hime the other day and he said he was sitting in his truck eating lunch when he seen a van pull up in front of the lock gates where they keep the outside stuff, it made him curious so he watch and the guy went in the store got 4 pairs of jeans went outside and threw them over the gate then went through the store back outside and got the jeans. Boy I bet he was suprised to see the manager watching him. The manager got the jeans back but the guy high tailed it out of there before he could get his plate number. If he hadn't been in his truck for lunch I guess he would have gotten a way with it. Then he said later on that day he was called to the register because a woman was trying to return 4 pairs of jeans with no recipt. She said that she had bought them that month so he said ok I keep a copy of all my register recipts I will just go look it up, she was gone before he even made it to the office.

Well gosh! All you can do is TRY to be proactive.
If you can, try and save a little where you can, money and expenses. Hard I KNOW!
How is the dry goods food stockpile? Even stocking up on raimen soup and rice and canned tuna is better than nothing if you don't have a stockpile.
I know I go on about food and stockpiles but I really believe in them. Face it, you CAN skip the phone bill and go with out phone but kids HAVE to eat.
I hope things workout. The math never lies, budget in INK!

Hugs to you, Jen!
You said hubby was a mechanic.
People always need a good one.
One of the men at work is a great
mechanic and he does work on the side
for all of us. Does a great job and
charges reasonable prices. At times,
he gets more requests than he can handle!
Maybe hubby could do extra jobs
like that on the days he is off, and
be able to take on more should his
days be reduced.Last edited by Surilda; 08-04-2009 at 01:14 PM. Reason: Changed word

I dont think the recession is over either dh is a hvac mechanic I keep records of all his work and overtime thru the years naturally summer is usually his busiest time last year overtime ended in Aug this year it ended in July. This is almost unheard of in his line of work we are thankful he has a job but this is when you make your money to tide you over the long winter. He is senoir man at a small company and he already forsees layoffs for the other guys If he does get laid off unlikely but anything can happen I will take it as a sign that its time to move. I have wanted to for a long time but didnt want to leave dh steady employment. I am hunkering down on expenses starting next month and waiting to see if the shoe drops

I'm sorry your family is going through this. I also don't think the recession is over. Our business picked up a little a couple of months ago, but winter and the holidays are just around the corner and those are the slowest months of the year for us (home improvement.)

Hang in there - I am not a pessimist, but I think we're in this for a longer haul - I mean, the real people like us. We all need to do what we can to be a proactive as possible. We will get through this - how we do it is up to us!!

I think some jobs / fields are going to be more rough than others in this recession. It is going to take some time to hit bottom and then start coming back up.
One of my son's works in a factory where they make tools. Things are a little slow. They did shut down a few weeks so far this year, by doing one week at a time. They could draw unemployment after they got their one week waiting period in. Now the factory has them on 4 day weeks. The 5th day they can draw unemployment for.
Where my hubby works, overtime is not being paid. One has to take extra time off, which is called comp time for any OT worked. Which is not a lot in the summer, but OT in the winter is , because they have to plow snow. I sure hope they get OT money. this winter again, instead of comp time. We keep the OT money separate and used it for things like our winter wood supply for heating, a chainsaw, etc. Things we need.Last edited by ladytoysdream; 08-05-2009 at 06:19 AM. I am with ya cricketlegs, I totally believe in a stockpile. Ours is not too bad but could use some work. My wonderful father in law is killing a beef in Sept and he is going to fill his freezer in his frig and give us the rest. All we have to pay is the kill bill. It could not have came at a better time. At least we will have plenty of meat this winter.
