My first attempt at making homemade Kahlua...
I screwed it up though because I didn't cook it long enough (3 hrs) and you need to constantly stir it ..when I stopped cooking you have to let it cool before adding the vodka/vanilla it turned into a carmel color and hardened like candy...I started to get upset with myself since I cooked it for nearly 2 hours and I didn't want to waste all that sugar (2 1/2 cups) so I decided to cook it a little longer on the stove and still no difference in the candy like stage so I said to heck with it and let it cool for awhile and added the other ingredients it was a little hard to get all the sugar sediment off the bottom of the pan after scraping it for awhile... once I started stirring it.. it started to look like thaqt dark amber color it was suppose to be but with lots of clumps of sugar that didn't disolve sp? so I put all of it in the blender and whipped the crap out of and guess what? it worked! LOL.. next time I will know what to do to not have to go through all that extra work and stress since I read the reviews (I got the recipe on allrecipes.com) which is what I should of done to begin with..

wow - you are tenacious!! I've made kahlua years ago, but never had to stir for 3 hours!! How did it taste?

I have several recipes for kahlua, but they are all very similar. Several of them you only boil the water and sugar long enough to dissolve the sugar, and one recipe cooks for 40 minutes.... but 3 hours? Wow that's a long time. I wonder if it was starting to turn to the hard or crack stage like when you're making candy.
The recipes I have taste all right but I miss the thickness of the real stuff. I bet yours probably is a lot thicker than mine.
Glad it all worked out!

Kahlua is the one thing I won't try to make homemade. I just can't imagine doing something like that to such a delicious liquor.
