    Default Sugar Shortage

Just in time for holiday baking... I just read an article about the possibility of a price hike due to a sugar shortage.

    http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline...e-imports.html

You may want to make sure you keep an eye out for coupons and pre-holiday season specials, and be thankful if you have sugar stockpiled, at least for the short-term or enough to get you through holiday baking time.

BTW - sugar is a food item that has a long shelf-life. I vacuum-seal sugar in FoodSaver bags.

I am so skeptical of everything I read.

The solution to this, according to manufacturers, is for Obama to ease trade restrictions. So I'm kind of wondering if these people have not taken a molehill and used it to speak out against government policy that does not work to their favor.

This is the same industry that (supposedly) prevented stevia growers from selling it as a sweetener.

I have a 22lb bag sitting in my kitchen corner and some still in my 30lb white Ikea storage bin, so I think we'll be ok until baking season.

It went down in price here by a ton!

Thanks for the heads up, It dropped here in price also, think I'll start a new stockpile for the holidays, like you said, it has a long shelf life, if I have way too much, I can always use it later.

All the more reason for me and my family to try avoiding it more. No stockpiling sugar on this end.

I single-handedly keep the sugar cane industry afloat. The only time I use sugar is pretty much my couple of spoons of it in my coffee in the morning, but I can go through a 20# bag a week when the hummers are in full force. You don't want to see a hummingbird coming off a sugar high. Better to just keep their sugar pipeline flowing.

Everything goes in cycles like this...if it isn't sugar, it's coffee. Personally, I think the big food giants need to get a grip...we've already lost way too many jobs to overseas companies and I haven't seen the price of those products come down any.

I always keep up to 50 lbs. of sugar on hand, so I'm going to be okay. Thank you for the heads up!!! Anybody notice how expensive peanut butter is getting?
