Things that go beep-beep in the night
Well, the night before last, I got to bed fairly early and slept soundly till suddenly I was awakened by a loud 'beep-beep' sound.
Dragging myself out of bed at 12:30 AM, I started searching for the sound, and as usual, I could hear it coming loudly from my upstairs smoke alarm. You see, at this time of year, tiny moths and flying insects are attracted to the little green light in my smoke alarm, and they enter it and cause it to go off. This has been the cause of many nights of interrupted sleep.
Well, I dragged the clothes hamper over to the smoke alarm, and after balancing on it precariously (with my cane), I proceeded to try to stop the sound by thumping on the smoke alarm. A little moth fluttered out of it, the light turned from red to green, but the sound didn't stop. I then pressed on the activate button several times, setting off a series of loud BEEPS, which may or may not have awakened the other tenants connected on the current. But the noise persisted. Completely baffled by now, I thumped it more vigorously, and then stopped to listen again.

Just then, it occurred to me that the sound might not be actually coming from the smoke alarm, but from the clock-radio on top of my fridge, situated below it on the main floor. And I was right. It was the clock-radio which I'd accidentally set to ALARM at 12:30 AM. The noise was echoing back from the second-floor ceiling above it.
I shut it off, felt foolish, listened for any irate neighbours, felt foolish... and went back to bed, and felt foolish...

We always hear noises in the night and day. Our house is haunted.

Toooooooo funny ingcog.!!! Thanks......needed the chuckle.
Usually it is my smoke alarms that wake me......when the batteries are going dead..... (I forget to change them). One (the carbon mono. combo) has this most OBNOXIOUS voice that will also come on and say "low battery"..."low battery" about three times.......then shuts up for another half hour. aaaarrrrrrgggghhhhh!

LOL! that reminds me of the time I used the automatic setting on the breadmaker. About 3 in the morning it started doing its thing. DH thought someone was breaking in and went after it with the baseball bat! You should have seen the look on his face when we discovered that it was only the breadmaker. LOL

Occasionally, if I forget to stick the cell phone on the charger, it does an annoying (and very LOUD) beeping noise as the battery dies. It goes on for about 20 minutes before the phone shuts itself off. Some mornings, when it goes off at, oh, 3am, I literally lay there about 10 feet from the phone, gritting my teeth and waiting for it to die. It would be faster to just get up and shut it off, but the rational part of my brain seems to not work very well at 3am.

That particular night, I finally headed downstairs to the basement to shut the upstairs power off at the breaker-box. That's what I have to do to get the smoke-alarm to stop, but when I got downstairs and turned the corner, I found out that the noise was really coming from the clock radio on top of the fridge.
(always sumpin', eh?)
