Has the recession lightened up in your area?
Has anyone noticed an increase in job hirings? Are people in your area still losing jobs and having a hard time finding new ones?
I have a friend who is a veteran and is looking to go back to work.
Is now the right time to make a career move and head back, or should people continue to wade in the water and wait for things to improve?Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

In my neighborhood more homes seem to go into foreclosure. The last I heard GA's unemployment 10.7%. More and more businesses seem to be going under. It just doesn't seem to be on an upswing yet. Hopefully by January we'll start to see an improvement here.

My area didn't seem to be hit for the longest time but recently it is starting to show. There are a lot of empty businesses and I know alot of people hoping to keep their jobs. My Husbands hours have been cut and right now we are hanging on for dear life. I am just glad that come November we will be out of credit debt and the only thing left is student loans. I think after the credit card debt is paid instead of snowballing everything into student loans we will be putting it into savings in case anything were to happen to hubby's job. I hope that things start looking up because right now it seems so bleak for us.

My company just started furlough days, but we are hiring a few positions too. Part of my job is to screen resumes, and it seems like we are getting more and more resumes for each job posting, so I'm guessing there are a lot of people without jobs and many other places are not hiring.

High unemployment in this area.
The factory where one of my son's works just let 8 more people go.
He was one of them this round. Not good
He is thinking the whole factory may shut down in less than 6 months.
I have been out of work 15 months. Not much out there to even look at.
Not sure how much OT the hubby will get this winter plowing snow.
The budget there is not looking good at all. I am better home without a job than out there with a job on unplowed roads.--------My signature--------

Manufacturing is still laying off in the area, without any hopes for anything changing.
City/County are looking for "creative" ways to get the budget to balance, which means early retirement for many and no new hiring.
The school budget is in shambles, thanks to cutbacks at the State level. No pay increases in the foreseeable future for teachers. Thoughts about going to 4-day school weeks are being tossed around.
Building is almost non-existent, as are home sales. Many businesses are struggling and others are closing.
The main thing that keeps the economy going in our area is the fact that we are mainly a farm economy. So we are one hail storm or flood away from a crop failure and our economy will tank along with the destroyed crops.
And don't forget, the Bush Tax Cuts will be over in January, so everyone will get a 15% tax INCREASE. Thank you Congress for not extending the tax cuts, and Mr. President who said 95% of the people wouldn't get a tax increase....

Well, for us personally things are heading south again. I've gone back to work after being a SAHM for 10 years, but my income doesn't come anywhere near what my husband can make and he doesn't have any work lined up again. I am grateful though my husband was able to get enough work to get us through (just barely) for the past 4 months. Will this recession ever end?

More and more people are leaving the islands as jobs dry up in the visitor industry. Hawaii is usually one of the last areas to rebound from any lags in the economy. Food and gas prices are going way up - it's challenging everywhere!!

It is actually a bit worse here. We seem to always lag behind in the midwest.

It's a mish mash. Our government is recalling some of the money it promised to the schools.
But there are tons of help wanted signs out there.
Dh job should be fine, in fact, he may be up for a promotion. The current supervisors aren't doing their jobs, they aren't getting their guys to work, so they were told that they were replaceable. This would be where dh would go. $200/wk increase plus overtime.
But that said, teh industry is shaky. If the CAD keeps climbing, then layoffs occur. Strange to want a weak currency, but for his job, it's important.

It really is confusing to know. Many companies have laid off even state and county services have laid off. There are stores that have gone out of business, meanwhile new stores are coming in. A local food pantry has had more clients even in a more afluent area.
