So when it rains, it pours..
Or is it when life gives you a lemon, make lemonade?
My sister has stage 4 colon cancer. She is now 36, diagnosed at 34. This last January they did 8 and a 1/2 hour surgery and removed 8 inches of her colon, and almost 60% of her liver at this point there was no cancer in her body.. She was on chemo for about 3 months for a safety measure.. She has gone in regularly for her blood work and scans. In the last six weeks she went from being healthy with no signs of the cancer to "several" spots on her liver again. She goes in today to see what the cancer center says and then tomorrow she starts her chemo again. The cancer is too spread apart to do another surgery. She is very worried and just wants this done, like all of us do. Please pray for my sister, she has three little boys 8,6, and almost 4, they really need their mommy... I am very scared right now that I may lose my sister at some point SOON---TO SOON!!! Thank you for listening.Bonnie mom to

Oh dear. Cancer is so difficult a thing to go through both as a patient and a loved one.

What a scary and difficult situation. I truly believe in prayers and miracles. Never give up hope. Prayers and aloha to you, your sister and family.
Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

I am so sorry to hear this, my prayers are with you, your sister and her family for the best outcome....
When my husband was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer and being treated at Dana Faber, they had "programs" for the children; which included back packs with books and information at the child's level to help them understand what was going on....and what to expect in a non fearful way. This was very helpful to my youngest who was 8, it really helped her not only understand but feel "included" in what was going on.
My best advice is to accept the diagnosis for what it is; do no miss a second, but my mind keeps coming back to a commercial for cancer center of america or something.... "You did not arrive here with a stamp on you that says you expire on a certain date"
Having said that; keeping her children involved will be key to their "survival" even if things turn for the worst do not try to protect them it will prevent healing in the future; if THEY know they were/are their for their mom it will help them accept things... and especially what to expect, hair loss, hospital bed, etc.... it is important for them not to be scared of the things that will happen in the future even with the best outcome;
acknowledging medical issues does not = defeat just lessens the scare.Last edited by kaurand554; 09-10-2009 at 09:47 PM.
