What job allows you on the net
I've been curious about this forever! All the jobs I had, there was no hanging out on the net. I am not just talking here but everywhere on the net. It seems a lot of people post messages or spend time why they are at work.
Are they all office jobs? How do they do it? lol

We own our own buisiness so i can sit here 24/7. While hubby does all the work. I can't rebuild clocks.

I worked at a high tech company and alot of the people in the software development department were constantly on the web. Then again it was part of the job.
Another place I worked at allowed and encouraged the employees to surf the net to get used to pointing and clicking. This was back when windows was the new big thing. We were also required to learn all new software at the same time. One of the women there was constantly using the alt + tab keys to go back and forth between sites and applications.
I think most employees in office jobs know that what they do online can always be checked by the systems people so most people are more cautious on what they do at the office.

I'm at an office. As part of my job I have to use internet sites (state and local), but I normally always have Facebook or FV open and post occasionally. Right now I'm on my lunch hour, so I do whatever I want!

I have had my own business selling online since 2004. So am online pretty much all day. Mostly working, but surfing for fun, researching, etc. also.

As I have mentioned here and there, I work circulation at a medical library nights and weekends. Together with a student worker or two every night, there are certain tasks we must do, but most are finished in an hour or two. At the times I'm at the library, especially after 6-ish, it's mostly students holed up somewhere studying. So there is a very large amount of downtime when we are essentially just being there, helping an occasional patron, but most just keeping the library open, as it were.
So long as I'm not playing online games, on social networking sites like Facebook - specifically forbidden -- or streaming audio or video (takes up too much bandwidth), no one seems to care.Last edited by dcompton; 09-14-2009 at 02:26 PM. Reason: To shorten

I'm a homecare RN on the overnight shift - so I basically monitor a sleeping ventilator dependent baby so mom and dad can sleep.
There's about 30 minutes of actual work (medications, breathing treatments, paperwork, and cold-sterilizing equipment) so the rest of the time it's internet (when the wireless router is behaving), cable or reading. (Reading is dangerous because I tend to get sleepy)
I am the world's leading expert on 3am infomercials! (Hey, someone has to be!!)
Every now and then my baby-patient is actually sick, so all bets are off and I'm at her side every minute of that 8 hours.

Any job where you are required to be physically present, regardless of the level of work, would probably allow you to surf the net on the clock.
I've had several such jobs. One of them was working for a large (national) home building company where I processed what's called the Job Starts. Basically, after the sales agent got a signed contract, and the buyer selected their items (floor plan, cabinet colors, etc), I had to put all that information into the system the moment it came in, and then update the website to reflect that that lot was no longer available. I also updated our region's website with current pricing every week (it changed every Monday). I was really fast, but I was required to be at the office from 8 am to 5 pm every day, because I had to be able to instantly update everything. The only day I was actually busy was Mondays, after the Friday/Saturday/Sunday house-buying rush. My boss let me surf in my down time, which was considerable (half the day).

Like MaryCarney, I'm also a home health nurse, except I take care of mostly elderly people and only spend 30-45 minutes in each home. With no access to the computer while I'm working, I can only come on FV once I get home from work.
I'm so envious of those who can access FV during the day.

We're not allowed to access Facebook or other social networking sites. We have the internet, but it's mainly supposed to be for checking our emails, looking up medical conditions, studying, etc. We look into the news a lot, or play the internet radio or videos on YouTube. But overall we don't spend a lot of time on the internet -- we don't have time!

I'm a part time telecommuting programmer (of legacy code) and full time homeschooling mother so I'm online a lot. I only log and get paid for the hours I actually work.
I hope to take 'early retirement' (aka quit) my paid job soon.

I work part time at a farmstand (no internet there) and part time at selling books/antiques and being a housewife. My DH works at home doing computer tech support, so he's online and/or on the phone all day.

I work in customer service. I don't even know what our official internet policy is, but if we're not too busy or it's lunch time, no one cares if we're on the internet. I mainly read, not post, because oftentimes things come up that have to be dealt with immediately, and then I can't remember what I was in the middle of posting.

I'm a home health aide and after all the chores have been completed and the client is resting, I'll check my email or Facebook on my phone. I can also check in while I'm waiting on clients who are in physical therapy, etc.
