Default Canned Mackerl? I'm scared =D

I went to the store this morning to get stuff to make salmon patties... The canned Mackerel was a dollar less and located next to the Salmon.. So I decided to get it... I figured if it was more Tuna-y that's fine we eat alot of tuna patties down here too.. But now I'm having buyers remorse... Can someone fill me in on what in the heck canned mackerel tastes like?!

    Thanks.

I use canned mackerel all the time, when it's cheaper than salmon. We like and I use it in salmon loaves, cakes and soup, just the same way.

Mackerel has a stronger fish flavor than tuna and some people say it has a bitter aftertaste, mostly it's going to depend on what quality fish you got and where it came from and how it was packaged. Same with sardines. Premium fish in olive oil with no additives can be really good.(and may cost $5 a tin) A lesser variety in soybean oil might be something you'd want to use in a casserole or croquette recipe where you can temper the flavors a bit.

Mackerel is much higher in omega-3s than tuna though. FYI.

I'm not sure if this concerns you or not, or if you realize it, but mackerel is on the list of fish that has high levels of mercury in it.

I have no idea what it tastes like. Did you just buy one can or several? If you don't like it and can't take it back just donate it at the next canned drive you see.
