Default Dh turned the heater on and....

ALL of my smoke detectors went off Its a BRAND new unit so I don't know what happened. The smell was horrible like something besides dust burning. I am still shaking after 30 minutes!

Well I'm sure that would scare the crud out of anyone. The good thing is... you know your smoke detectors work which is very important.

Oh my goodness, that must have be so scary for you!! At my house, the smoke detectors tend to go off only when I get sidetracked while cooking....I would be freaking out big time if they went off when I turned the furnace on!

    What kind of heater?
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Most of my heaters have a stinky burn in time. When our gas fireplace was new, we had to open windows and turn on fans. It was bad.

Ex-hubby and I bought a brand new home that had sat unsold/vacate for 3 years. When we turned the gas heat on for the first time, it burned all the rust, dust debris and threw the soot out all the vents. The master bath was HUGE with white tile on the floors and walls. It was a mess to clean up. The smell went away shortly after that.

If you are concerned, have an A/C heat company come out and do an inspection. When you bought your house didn't you have it inspected? I know our inspector turned the heat on (in our current house) and checked it even though it was August.

Have you called the company that installed your brand new unit to see if this is normal?

Glad you're alright after the big scare...best thing to do is open the window and turn on ceiling fans to circulate the air.

Some brand new units will do that. Ours did when we bought a new one. It stunk so bad and all the smoke detectors went off as well.

Phone your furnance company and check to see if it is normal or else get them back there to check it. Good luck!

I was going to say-Ours is gas and it is stinky for a bit every year. As good as you vaccumn some dust will need to burn off.
Our apt. space heater really stinks (also gas) for awhile too. My DH has virtually no sense of smell and must be part bloodhound so I always just assume it's me. I have to say the smoke alarm thing seems over the top.Call the gas co. and have them bring a detection meter. Safe than Sorry. KWIM??
