State weatherization programs
Here in Illinois we have a weatherazation program. It goes by your gross income. I found out we quilify for it.We never did in the past. But they will come out and do a audit, insulate,replace windows, update furnace anything that needs to be done to help with heating. You all need to check your local programs. For us we were able to go by 2008 taxes. We have own buisness through our house so we dont have paychecks. So we are signed up and will get a letter when they will be out to do the audit. You can qualify for up to $10,000. They do all the work.

Wonderful! We never qualify for anything. Then again, I'm glad my husband and I are healthy and both have jobs.

When they were testing this out (they got some grant money), they came to mom's house and put in CFLs, weatherstripping around doors, etc.

Our utility company offers a free home energy audit where they come in and offer recommendations on what to do. They also give some CFL light-bulbs, aerators for faucets, etc.
They offer rebates on the work that is done to the home as well.McD

I just checked for Louisiana. The income levels are pretty low here for qualification. I wish we qualified, it seems like a great program.
