Grocery prices inching up again
Has sugar prices gone up where you are I was in Walmart today and Domino's sugar was 3.50 at Shop n Save it was 2.85 the store brands were 2.50 to 2.80 I also noticed that cereal has gone from 2.68 to 2.98 to 4.49 and chicken is way up there if wasn't for coupons my bill would be so scary. It just seems that every time I step foot in a grocery store or Walmart the prices have gone up again some times If I have to go back the same day like if I forget some thing and I'll notice it went up in between.Has any one noticed this? I remember a lot the prices from last year and thought they were high but this year they are over the top.

It is happening here in Baltimore too. What once cost me under $20 for the weekly perishables now costs me a few dollars beyond it.

i noticed the same at wal-mart last week.... they have their new 'revised' great value products with the new 'ugly-more generic'y (is that a word?) looking label' ...that looks like whoever designed didn't put much thought into it.....anyway.....
i noticed that all this 'new label' stuff is coming in and the prices are being jacked up all over the store....on everything.... wal-mart is definately not the cheapest place to shop anymore and i think people are starting to see and realize that....
our little local groceries have had quite a few good loss leaders these past few weeks....

I have noticed the increase too. We have 2 grocery stores and a regular Walmart. Everything has increased a little bit. The canned veggies were up almost 12 cents at WM last week. That is alot in one week!

Our grocery prices have been steadily going up - I really don't know how people .afford fruits and veggies, much less proteins. These past few weeks have been especially challenging.
Need to take more time to plan, compare, etc. And we need to make sure that we don't succumb to eating too many carbs... cheaper though they may be.Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

Here too.. according to my little black book (which you guys told me to keep) grocery prices have gone up about 33.2% over the last 18 months.
I have no idea how this is all going to play out. I mean about 10% of people are unemployed and another 7% are under employed and prices on basics like food and power just keep going up.

One of the advantages of stockpiling is that when I go grocery shopping the bulk of the purchases are things that are discounted. If you looked in my basket you'd be hard-pressed to figure out just what's on the menu this week with such an odd assortment of items (LOL). So I shop for bargains at the store, and "shop" for meal planning at home.
In August/September store-brand canned fruit was very cheap and I loaded up every week and put it in storage. Now it's nearly double that price.
This week there were HUGE bargains on store-brand flour, white sugar, brown sugar, and powdered sugar - nearly 50% off regular price. So I loaded up on some of those, and I suspect they will also go up drastically when the warehouse is cleared out.
I've been purchasing discounted frozen veggies, but since I only have the freezer on my refrigerator to use for frozen foods, I've been dehydrating them. They work fine re-hydrated, added to soups/stews/casseroles.
When eggs get more expensive per egg than powdered whole eggs, I'll open a can of powdered whole eggs and use them in cooking and baking instead of fresh shell eggs.
Honeyville Grain - approx. 85 eggs/$15.29 = 18-cents per egg
http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/pow...leeggscan.aspx
Eggs could go up very quickly because of all this unseasonable cold weather. Egg production goes down with the temperature...
I've been making gluten (aka seitan) and grinding it to mix with ground beef or ground pork sausage. This way I'm extending meat WITH a high-quality, low-costing, protein product, not additional carbohydrates. I also make a cereal-like product, "Gluten Crunch", that has a multitude of uses.
Even the price of dried beans and split peas has gone up.

I have also noticed the price of pasta is up there too I only have 4 grocery stores to choose from and the prices run about the same there's no coupon doubling or any extra perks so this has become a challenge I bought 60.00 worth of groceries yesterday with the coupons I paid 48.75 still more than I wanted to pay . But with a stock pile there is a little more wiggle room if I have to skip a week.

Sugar is higher because of a shortage of domestic product and the Federal government will not ease restrictions on imports. Because domestic sugar prices are rising, many manufactured goods made with sugar are going increasing in price as well. I think I posted about this on here a couple of months ago.

I have noticed that food prices have been going up but the other day I had to buy trash bags and I about fell out when I saw the prices on them. Some of the name brand trash bags were over ten dollars. I also had to get some deoderant and had a coupon but the deoderant was over four dollars. My goodness. I settle for generic trash bags and a cheaper brand of deoderant.

Yes, I've seen it. I'm struggling with it. I find that I have buy only what's loss leaders or clearanced/salvage that week. This week it was clearanced ground turkey .99 cents a pound and 4 boxes of clearanced cereal for $1 and 4 bags of dried beans.
I plan on stopping at Acme today and getting their 5 lb. bags of potatoes on sale for .99 cents and their $1 a box cereal. I'm getting 10 of each.
I do a lot like Grain Lady, but I find it impossible to eat a balanced/healthy diet on our income. I make sure my family takes their vitamins & supplements everyday. I need to get better about myself though. these rising food prices are killing us, as are gas, electric, ect. I found the only way to manage is to not wait till we need something to purchase it, but to find it on sale or couponed or clearanced so it's a steal. When your income does not rise but continues to fall, there is no other way.Last edited by pollypurebred39; 10-10-2009 at 05:25 PM.

I've noticed this too. I picked up a few bags of sugar a couple months ago- and then when we made our twice-monthly trip to Walmart a couple weeks ago and found that the price had gone up $1 per 5lb bag.
I'm going to hit them hard this week- got to grab yeast for the next few months before the price hits the sky.

I had been doing most of my grocery shopping at Costco and I think I tend not to pay as close attention as I should to the prices when I shop there. Plus I'm tempted to add other things into the cart that I probably could live without. So today I went to Safeway instead because I want to get more in touch with the prices of various foods. I think the thing that surprised me most today was the prices on 16 oz. of frozen veggies....$1.75 to $2.50 each on sale. It's not like I got anything fancy, just frozen spinach, frozen brussels sprouts, and frozen cauliflower/broccoli mix.

I mentioned a few days ago about milk jumping from $2.79 I think it was to $3.09. Alot of other stuff also.
We have a Publix, Sweetbay, Winn Dixie and the Walmart but it is about 20 miles away. Also a Family Dollar, Walgreens, CVS and a Dollar Tree. I still go to Walmart for alot of stuff just not a special trip. I make it worth my while.
For the last 3 to 4 months or so I've done a huge huge part of my grocery shopping with the BOGO's. Publix is really good about having alot of them a week. If it's something I don't use I don't get it but most of the time we use about 40 to 50% of the items up. I came home Thursday night with actually 4 or 5 bags of stuff and came t $13.22. They also do a "Buy Theirs Get Ours Free" deal where you buy like a 18oz jar of Jif peanut butter and get their 18oz free. Sometimes its a good deal sometimes fair. Have to do the math in your head. Publix never marks down meat tho.
Sweetbay marks down meat every day. And I do mean they mark it down. They also have unadvertised managers specials on meat that are really really good.
I don't do Winn Dixie because I personally think they are higher than the others. I look at the sale papers and if it reaches out to me then maybe.
I've learned to look at the sale papers on Thursday night when they all come out and make my list out by the store. I list everything I want then take it from there. I may not get everything on the list from each store because say Publix's BOGO may be fantastic that week and the better way to go.
Family Dollar has alot of taxables really reasonable and they also take coupons. Folgers Coffee, big can, is $6. Cheapest I've seen yet. Basically I'm finding that a quick stop to different places while you're out is a good thing. That's the way I found the Folgers. Never had been in there before. Found alot of items I will price check with Walmart but think they will be cheaper.
I have also never done a price book. No offense ladies but when I first joined here and I read a small part about them I ( I didn't read much) I thought to myself Man, these women have to much time on their hands....Well ladies, now I applaud you...hats off. Guess what..I am going to start one of my own and I WILL carry it with me.Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.
