Unhappy Some old music gets me down ..

I just downloaded some old songs I used to listen to many years ago. Instead of making me happy it only made me very sad. It reminded me of a couple years in a relationship that started out good but ended badly. This is not the first time it's happened. There are some songs I just can't stand to hear at all because they remind me of someone who hurt me.

It's sad that I can't enjoy some songs because they are attached in my mind to certain people and I don't know what I can do to sever the attachments.

Anyone else feel that way? I have a lot of music I think I will just get rid of because I don't want reminders of the past.

There are a few songs that I hear on occasion that make me think of things in my past. Some good, some not so good.

There is one song that makes me think of my father when he was alive. I love to hear it.

I listen to oldies stations mostly. Sometimes one will come on and I will immediately think of the place and who I was with at a time I heard it. Alot of times it will bring back memories of grandparents or my mother which are good.

My Dad was a singer (professional) so i cant tell you how many songs remind me of him Sometimes I cry when I hear them but many times I smile Music has a way of linking you to the past and invoking memories you may want to forget. Its not the music its the unresolved relationship issues and the hurt Handymom Try to remember the good in those times and maybe you will work thru the pain. OH and Daddy I hope your singing up there in heaven along with me when I put our songs on . Love you Daddy

I know what you mean. There are quite a few songs that remind me of my high school sweetheart, who was killed in a motorcycle accident. I often think, if he were alive today, what would he be doing; where would he live, etc.

Sometimes for me it's the song itself that makes me said, some of the classical music on my mp3 player just evokes that feeling, but I'm not sure why.

Some songs make me think of my Dad too - especially "Arms of the Angels" - not sure if that is the actual name of it. I used to hear it on the radio when he was sick and hope that his suffering would end soon. I cry just thinking about that song because it makes me feel guilty.

Hang in, Handymom. I'm hoping time makes the pain less.

I love that about songs...that they remind you of people and places, but if a song is too painful to you, don't listen anymore. There are lots of songs out there that won't hurt you. Not trying to be heartless or anything. When I hear one particular song that reminds me of my brother who was killed at 21, I turn it off quickly. I can't stand to hear it! That song is the Beaches song sung by Bette Midler. It kills me to hear it.

I know just what you mean. A particular song can bring back all kinds of memories, good or bad. Incidentally, I was in my car recently and an old song that I love "She's like the wind" sung by Patrick Swayze came on the radio. It made me so sad after his recent death.

Lots of songs do that to me, too. I hate most love songs, anyway. I'm a jaded old woman.

I totally hear you about how music evokes old emotions, memories and thoughts but think of it this way: it was there with you during that phase of your life. It helps remind you of who you were and have far and where you've come from. If it hasn't killed you, its only helped to make you stronger.

I asked my Mom once if she wanted me to make her a mix cd of music from her prime era (50's doo-wop, I think it was) but she said no. She said she likes newer music and the old songs make her sad. Now I understand what she meant.
