    Default $5.00 Divorces

Before I get jumped on, lol, let me say that I'm not sure if this should have been posted in General Chat, Finance, Family, or in Money. I did not see a "Lawyer" or a "Legal Fees" forum, so I chose what I thought would be viewed the most .... General Chat.

I had recently done a divorce myself for a friend of mine, and am working on a second divorce for another friend. One had been separated for over 16 years, and the other for 5 years. Neither can afford a lawyer to do a divorce, so I did it myself.

I went to the court house, to the cashier section and inquired about doing a divorce myself, and asked for the names of the necessary forms to do a divorce. Much to my surprise, I was then told they sell a packet with all the necessary papers in it, for $5.00. I purchased it.

I then inquired about filing for (remember this word) INDIGENCY. I was told which clerk to see. I then had my unemployed friend fill out a form for 'indigency' and he was approved.

Indigency, for those who don't know, is a way of saying you're BROKE and can't afford things (in this case, it's the court fees to process any court proceedings for a divorce.) The fees were then waived. I mailed the forms to the proper persons (their soon to be ex-spouse), and viola! The divorce was final 30 days later.

Not trying to increase divorces, just trying to ease the costs of granting a divorce. Of course if there is property to divide, its a whole different matter - slightly more complicated, but do-able if the terms are agreed upon by both parties. If you are arguing over who gets what, then I'd advise a lawyer, though still not necessary.

Luckily, both of my friends rented homes and separate accts because they'd been apart for so many years. Kids and child support are handled as separate issues in many states, and are usually already decided by the time divorces start.

Not promoting divorce, just the money saving costs of divorce!

    Thanks,
    Sandi

Well thats great. It works that way here too. But in some states you ar not allowed to do it yourself. You have to have a lawyer or legal aid do everything for you..........
I did my first one but I'm not going to do my second one. He can rot........and he's to lazy to do it.......

Of everything that was agreed in meditation with my divorce it should have cost 5 bucks. My main concern was the kids and that was a $35.00 mediation appointment, 24 months later and a few more 0's added to the original price.....

    Thanks for posting this.
I have a niece that her husband left her with all the bills and everything and he said he wanted a divorce and that she would have to do everything for it.

I will send her this information.
