Default unexpected bill of $410.00 but..

My husband has been taking his motorcycle test and he finally passes this week, but va dmv wouldn't give him his license with the endorsement because NC DMV had something on him from 1988!!! but his drivers license was ok.

so he calls and leaves a message with the nc courts
they call back and tell him the ticket is 130.00 the processing fee is 30.00 the dmv fee is 50.00 and the late fee is 200.00!!

so i call and i am told they dont charge late fees...i was told that twice..the third time i got the same lady he talked to who was rude to him and she was as equally rude to me and said there is a late fee, he should have paid it and if he did he should have kept his paperwork...i tried explaining that 21 years ago who has papers going that far back..plus he has been divorced and remarried since then...and how come we werent notified before...because he had a cdl license a few years after that ticket he had a motorcycles licenses once before i mean we are talking about 2 decades of drivers licenses activity....she said it was his responsibility...she didnt get that he didnt know...he has always paid his tickets so its not like he KNEW something was out there..

anyways when i asked to speak with the next person up she was smart and said call the general assembly of NC and when i asked for the number she told me to look it up

so anyways i looked up the big wig of court of clerks and emailed her what happened who i talked to and what could be done

and she said that they didnt change the laws to add late fees until 1993 that he cant be charged a late fee...yay saved $200.00!!

now the "i feel crappy" news...my husband set aside some money for his bike, which i didnt know about (he was now going to use it for the ticket but it want enough for the whole ticket fees) and i saved up 100.00 to take to the craft show coming to town..well its my dads b day last night and i wanted to take him to dinner but was going to have to used my craft show money..then hubby pops up and tells me to keep my money he will pay for it.

now i got the ticket straight he doenst have all the funds...so i am putting up half this week of half this week and he is putting up half...and then next week i will budget the remaining balance and send payment

Stinks...least it's over...keep all paperwork and I would send it to be signed for and return receipt requested. Cost a little more but if they lose it you have proof and who signed for it.

Those unexpected bills can really bite sometimes, but at least it is now taken care of. I would definitely follow the above suggestions about receipts etc.

Congrats on your husband passing the test and getting the endorsement. What type of bike is he looking for and price range? I ride myself and belong to a couple forums, where members sometimes sell their bikes to get a different one. LOL

there seems to be a lot of this I know this guy who is just 1 year shy of 80 and he has been disabled for many years now he has to pay 93.00 a month from his SS to pay back child support ( I'm all for kids getting their child support ) but his kids are like what late 50's early 60's.It seems the states are so desperate that they are going way back and pulling money out from the past.Sorry to hear you and hubby had to go through this hope it all works out

My ex was $30k behind due to fees and interest for child support. They told me the only was I could get it was to wait for him to collect SS since he spent so much time working under the table. Stinks on both sides.

My DD#2 got a plain old speeding ticket (no DUI, no reckless driving, just going too fast) in Tennessee, paid it, forgot about it. 10 months later, gets a letter from the NC BMV (where she lives) saying her license is being suspended for 30 days because of said ticket!

She lives alone, works 'til midnight at an isolated location (an airport hangar) where there is no public transportation. Had to go to a hearing, and was allowed to keep her license - BUT if she gets a ticket in the next year, she will get the 30 day suspension.

I still cannot get over the fact it's for a ticket she got in another state!!

You need to get the late fee matter cleared up BEFORE you send in payment. If they don't write off the late fees and you make payment, they won't consider the matter taken care of.
