    Default I'm so excited.

I'm supposed to be getting my chickens today!

The coop is all set up, feed is bought, all I need now is the chickens.
And I even have people who would like to purchase eggs from me. Not that it's a major thing, I just want my chickens haha.

Woo Hoo! Wish I was getting chickens but our HOA won't allow it. Sigh, miss having fresh eggs and fresh chicken.

    very cool.

Was wondering how much insulation your coop has and what you keep it warm with?

Well the coop is in a barn with stone walls on 3 sides. I also have 2 light sockets set up if I find it gets to cold I can put in heat lamps.

Also goats are going to be put semi near the chickens so I'm hoping that'll help with getting heat to them. Could be entirely wrong on that one though.

Congratulations...on both counts...on getting them and having revenue already set to come in from them. Enjoy and post your adventures with them. Looking forward to reading

Ooo Very nice! I'm getting 8 hens that are already laying. Might be getting a Rooster for free as well.

I'm going to see how 8 go for me right now. If I like it and can handle it I plan on getting more.

Arg now I'm not getting them till Wednesday.

But I will defiantly be posting pictures and letting everyone know how it's going.

    Quick Question;
If I want to hatch my own chickens and have a rooster do I need an incubator?

If you have a hen or two that goes broody....will set the eggs...then you won't need a incubator.

I want to hatch some chicks in the spring. I have at least one potenial broody young hen who I might be able to put to work. I probably will also borrow the son's incubator though for a bigger hatch.

    Congrats on getting chickens

The coop. We are not planning on heating ours this winter. There are several vents up high and 2 good windows that can be opened a bit if need be. As long has you can keep them out of a draft or cold wind, they should be fine. At least that is what I have read and understood about the subject. We went with orpingtons because they are supposed to be a hardy bird, good for eating and laying eggs both. So far though, the birds seem to be winning....they be pets. So to make them pay for their feed, they better make some babies in the spring for selling.

How would I know if they will be broody?
They are 5 month old Isa Chickens. A type of hybrid chicken. That was the only type they were selling. But if I enjoy this I'll be getting more, and different breeds.

oh.....you will KNOW when a hen goes broody....she won't get off the nest only rarely....and if you try to take eggs away from her....she probably will peck you....
I wish I had a video of Little Red in action....
when you are about a foot away from this chicken when she is in the nestbox, and she thinks you want what is under her....she wins.....no ifs ands or buts..... it's like *go ahead human....make my day *

She is not a big chicken either...half orpington, half banty.......

Here you all all ready and rarin' to go, and now you have to wait!

We SO want chickens -- even get a couple of chicken publications -- even though our covenants around here prohibit them. We're thinking of challenging the rules and goin' for it anyway, since we live in the country and the "rules" are questionable at best (long story). OTOH, reading all the pubs is a little daunting: it's a lot of work for newly-transplanted country dwellers like us! (All the same, all of you chicken owners make it seem like sooo much fun!)

Enjoy! I'll be pulling for you, and looking forward to reading about your adventures!
