Am I ever mad! Fraud
I was at Discover cards website looking to see what my rewards were when I said I had a balance. Uh no I pay it in full online as soon as it is used.
Some once charged $1700 to verison on my card! What on earth?!?! I promptly called the fraud division and they cancelled the card numbers. She assured me I was not responsible and a fraud specialist would fix it.
She said it was keyed in manually when it was used. She said it likely means somewhere I used it someone swiped all the info off it. I only use it if it is for something big and usually travel related. The last place we used it was when I payed for a 3 bedroom condo at a waterpark resort last month for us and other family members. It had to be paid by CC as the resort put a hold for $3000 on the card to protect against damage to the condo at the resort.
I know I'm not responsible but still what a shock and aggravation!!! I use my check card for 99.9 % of everything. It is frightning to see my cc or check card numbers be used that way.
What on earth can someone charge $1700 to verison for anyways????? GRRRRRRR~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

Glad you pay attention to your statement and glad Discover is cancelling the number. I also hope they can do something to the person who stole the number.

I too have had something like this happen. Mine was for Vonage in London, England. It was a smaller charge, but sneaked by me for a few months. They cleaned it up real quick, and I did get my money back. They'll fix it up!

I am sorry that this happened to you. This sort thing makes me so mad, too.
My husband had his identity stolen and someone opened a cell phone account in his name and then never paid the bill. We found out when a collection agency called us to collect. Luckily the fraud department at Cingular was nice about and fixed the error.Julie

We had something similar happen to our checking account last week. Some company in England I never heard of tried to take two charges of $240 each. My bank knows us very well and actually put a freeze on my card and called us. Of course we told them we did not use our card for anything like that.

Yikes, all these are scary.
And with the holidays I would bet that it will get even worse.

Wow there sure are a lot of us that have had something like this happen. For online transactions Discover has a virtual card number. I've never used it online though. We do not get paper statements so iut can't be from my garbage. So it seems it has to be like the lady from card holder services said ~ it was stolen somewhere I used the card. GRRRRR The only recent places were all in WI Dells in OCT.
Usually Discovers fraud division calls when there is an odd charge. Like when I bought my computer. I use the card for the rewards/extra warrant and pay online as soon as it shows up there. They didn't think 1700 to Verison was odd but buying a computer was?????????
I'm glad it isn't my check card though. I know a few people that have had it happen to their check card and had their accounts frozen while it got sorted out.
This has me really re thinking doing 99% of everything electronically or be check card or CC.
The lady from Discover also told me to call experian and put a 90 day fraud alert on both mine and Dh's SSN numbers so I did that too.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Dh is totally worried somehow we will get stuck with the bill. It sure pays to check your accounts constantly!!!!~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

It happened to my mom when i was young from her own bank. 6 months after she got the card. one of the clerks used her card and made purchases that thye knew no way my mom would of made like out of province theme parks. Of corse she was fired and mom at the time didnt press charges. but the clerk may never work in abank again but still should of went to court. The bank hushed it and knew mom would give in.

With my banking arrangements now, I am using a debit card, but things like this make me nervous. I have never been at ease with a card that gives a direct pipeline to my money, but the interest it pays me is so nice. But I never, ever use it where I have to actually hand it to someone like at a drive through. If I dont have enough cash in those circumstances, it always goes a regular CC that at least provides insulation between the card and my bank account. I'm also leery of using it online, unless it's a company I have a pretty long track record with.
I don't want to be the stereotypical old lady afraid of the all these new-fangled ways, but some of them verge on the scary. I know there are safeguards and limited, if any liability, but still...Donna

Mine was Visa. Their fraud department has caught 3 charges so far. Two were fraud, one was a mistake by a local retailer. They had accidently charged the full day's receipts to my card. LOL. Ummm....Visa knew that couldn't be right.
This is why I never ever use a debit card online, I always use a credit card.
