Default My house is in a book!

A older gentlemen that grew up in my 1915 house wrote an autobiography. Although the book talks about his whole life he talks about growing up in the house during the depression.

It was so neat meeting him (he stopped by to see the house and he signed his book for us) It was so much fun reading the book learning about the history in our house. It was fun reading about life in my town during that time.

It so happened my son was just assigned to read an autobiography and the teacher is letting him read this man's book. He is really enjoying it as well.

Last night while his sister was filling up the tub, a bit to full, our son mentioned that the book said that in our town during the depression there was a water rationing and you we only allowed to fill the tub with three inches of water. He really seemed connected to history at that point.

I like thinking "That tub, our tub" had only three inches of water during that time (it is the original cast iron tub) I thought if this house and the family that lived her "survived" the depression then we can weather any thing also.

Yes, this book about life here, in this town, in our house, the connection to history was/is definitely a gift.

That's about the coolest thing ever, and what a great way for your son to connect with history.

Do you mind telling us the name of the book? I am an avid reader and this sounds very interesting.

I feel uncomfortable sharing that as it mentions exactly where I live.

I think that he also got to meet the man has made it even more real.`

It was very thoughtful of the man to stop by our house and introduce himself. We even got to ask him questions. We know which bedroom was his and that he had a little sister, just like my son.

    Nice thing to happen
Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

    Question

Yes it was/is a true gift to be thankful for.

The man left use his business card. I was thinking about possibly sending him a Christmas card letting him how much we appropriated the living history.

    Good idea or not?

i can relate to your story as our home that we just moved from was built in 1874 and it also is in a history book and they have a blk/white photo taken in 1897 in it with the original owners standing on the front lawn in all their 'finest', the kids sitting in the horse drawn wagon.... it's pretty awesome...

to think of all the history in our homes that went on...births, marriages, even deaths.... i too had sat back many times in one of the rooms and thought about what must have gone on before me in that very spot.... the garage across the street that now belongs to the neighbor used to be their carriage house (of course now completely re-sided and looks nothing like a carriage house)....and the home next door (which we purchased as a rental property) was once a true log cabin..(well...technically it still is coz it was re-sided also and 'supposably' the logs are still there underneath..(which i imagine are probably eaten away by termites by now..but you never know).....funny how things revolve and change thru the years....

    enjoy your home....(and your celebrity-ness....lol).....

definately...or even a simple 'thank-you' card.... he stopped and took the time out of his own day to 'enlighten' you so he has already opened the door to friendship... i think it is a great gesture...

with my own home (built in 1874) in the 10 ys we lived there we had 3-4 times that 'older' people stopped by that had 'grown-up' or 'lived' in the home for a period of time and they just wanted to know if they could see the old place..(and i always granted them a tour)....
