    Lightbulb layaway

I used to love layaway until I started using credit cards. Now, I am not using credit cards and just found out that Kmart and Sears have Layaway. What happened? I would love to use layaway again.

I think alot of stores decided to cut costs with the layaway departments because so many people turned to credit cards for the instant gratification of their purchases. Toysrus is also offering layaway this Christmas, I have wondered if they will offer the layaway throughout the year, or if this is a one time thing. Their attempt at getting in on whatever $$$ will be spent this holiday season. We did a layaway at Kmart, when we were in we stood inline for almost 2 hours to put our layaway on. That has really had me wondering if the stores that are doing layaway will fair better with holiday sales.

I don't know if this is true or not....but when the son was here the other day we were talking about store sales.
He made mention because Kmart does layaways that they beat Walmart last year for sales because Walmart does not do them.

People are trying to get away from credit cards, so it looks like layaways are the way to go. Or save so much a week , ahead for Xmas.

Kudos to Toysrus - smart business move. Since they focus on a select type of product, they would really only have to staff that dept. lightly, and are usually allotted the hours during the holidays for extra help anyway.

I am going to put some stuff on layaway that isn't for Christmas. I think that will help me get some things I really need and make me learn to wait until they are paid for before getting them. Oh....I can't wait to be debt free!

I love K-mart for this exact reason. Besides where I live k-mart is only about 5 minutes away as opposed to Wal-Mart which is about 30 minutes. You get about 2 months to pay off your layaway and it's kind of like christmas because I usually forget some of the things I put in there in the first place. LOL They don't do layaways (around here atleast) that start in december though.

The only thing that has me leery about layaway is knowing your money is tied up - as in the monies you've already paid off towards your items on hold. [unless I don't fully understand how the layaway concept works?]

Example: Items on layaway total $300. You've paid $200 into it, unexpected life event occurs and you need that $200 ASAP vs the 'wants' on layaway. Your $200 is tied up and you need to spend $ to break that $200 free (cxl fee?). Why pay for your own money?

Personally, I prefer to save up $ for whatever I want in full then go buy it so I can leave with it ASAP w/o owing anyone anything.

If it's a need - I'd have already saved up for it or put it on credit card. (I'm not saying those who use layaway are all people who only 'want' things....sometimes this is your only option right?)
