To buy, or not to buy...
Saturday November 28th is Buy Nothing Day. It's a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life. The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from shopping and anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

It's a great idea and one I'm really going to start working on. I'll see how far my budgeting will take me.

That is my grocery shopping day.
Oh well we can't win them all, but good luck to everyone.

I am in this until Monday. I let a friend borrow my car yesterday and will not get it back until Monday morning - then she will have it again Monday night until at least Jan. 3, 2010!! That's plenty of opportunity for no spending!! Good luck all!!

I'm IN! With an extra mouth to feed in the house, and some pretty major bills to pay in the next 2 weeks, I'm more than happy to stay home and do my housework, Christmas decorating, a little baking with on-hand supplies, and list on Ebay all weekend, without spending a penny!

I'm in on this one! I wanted to stay at home and "chill" with cleaning (is that sad that cleaning my house will help me relax?) and hopefully put up a few decorations for Christmas (maybe even get in a little bit of wrapping presents!).

Today was a buy nothing day for me and tomorrow will be too! I swore I wasn't getting sucked into the holdiay shopping frenzy this year. I have most of my Christmas shopping done...did it in January & February during all the clearance sales. Just have a few odds & ends to get now.

I didn't refrain for spending like I normally do on Buy Nothing Day like I usually do. This year, I did take the children out for a treat
A shake for son
a 1/2 price soda ( and free tater tots) for daughter
a 1/2 price soda for me

That's okay. I refuse to participate in pointless boycotts, anyway. If you are going to boycott, then boycott. Don't shift your shopping one day up or one day back. Have a buy-nothing Christmas if you really feel that strongly. Home-made holidays are not that hard if you have any skills at all.
The real problem is that shopping is a "way of life" for a lot of people. We view shopping as a necessary evil. I have fibromyalgia, and I detest walking around the mall or big box stores looking for the things that I need. I have to buy new jeans every year, and we just went shopping for them two weeks ago. I would rather have a root canal. It took 4 hours, 8 stores, and 25 different brands/styles to find two pairs of jeans that fit properly and had the right cut of leg. Several pairs were labeled straight leg but were actually tapered or boot cut. Several pair were labeled low rise, but they were actually what I would call hip huggers. Several pair said they sat at the natural waist, but I was able to pull them up over my boobs. It was exhausting and I had to have my husband make dinner that night. And because manufacturers change styles every 3-6 months, I will have to do it all over again next year.
DH & I finished our Christmas shopping last week, except for his father, sister, and grandmother (and we have our lists ready for them, we just haven't made it to the hardware store and NY&CO).
We already did Christmas with my family (yesterday). We are actually on vacation this week. We are going to go play some mini-golf in the warm southwestern sunshine today, before we head on back to the cold snowy midwest on Monday.

I'm in.
And as far as this Christmas season, we have cut out buying for 14 sisters, brithers, nieces, nephews, etc. We're just doing a pot luck and visit with them instead. We all need to get back to basics more and enjoy the reason for the season.
Necessities will be the theme for the family gifts I will be buying, but I will also be making plenty of my gifts.frugalcountrylady.blogspot.com
