zhu zhu pets
have you seen these things? Apparently they are a hot item right now but until a few days ago I had not heard of them. Has anyone ever seen one in person? Do they actually run around by themselves and would they run on carpet?
What's your opinions on them?

I had never heard of them. Checked them out on Toys 'R' Us, and figured they MUST be popular, because all the hamsters AND their accessories were sold out!

My youngest son is getting them...had to search high and low for them...prices on ebay are outrageous. I only bought one piece there. My Mom happened to find them at ToysRUs one night or ds wouldn't be getting them. They are still at her house so I haven't seen them in person yet. I hope that they're good 'cause this is going to be ds' biggest thing...she bought most of the stuff.

I have no idea what they even are. Are they for kids?

Oh dear, my daughter keeps asking for one. I haven't paid one bit of attention and don't even know what it is.
I may regret not listening up because if she puts this on her list for santa am going to searching high and low for one.

I guess I'm a scrooge! I know what they are, but with my kids having outgrown the "gotta have the latest greatest toy" phase, I look at these things with a more critical eye than I used to.
For years, I've done what lots of other parents do - their kid claims to HAVE to have the most popular toy on the market for Christmas, so I searched high and low to find it, and once I found it, tried to procure it at the lowest price possible (not always successfully - I won't tell you how much I paid for the Wii system a couple of years ago when it was the next big thing - but here's a hint: they're half the price I paid now.)
So far, my kids have received the following for Christmas over the years from either myself or their dads, because they were the "latest" toy, and what they "had to have" - followed by where that toy is now:
-Hot Wheels OctoBlast - in a plastic tote in his room, hasn't been touched since 3 months after it was bought. Played with it exactly twice.
-Realistic moving T-Rex toy, remote control - in toybox in his room - last played with 2 months after receiving it. Played with it slightly more than the OctoBlast.
-D-Rex remote control dinosaur (his dad paid $150 for this thing) - received last Christmas, played with for about 4 months, took with him to his dad's house when he moved. Not sure if he plays with it at all now, or just took it with him because his dad bought it for him.
-Metal Detector - in the box in his room. Never, ever seen him use it.
-Telescope - in the box in his room. Used about 2x a year, when he remembers that he has one.
-EZ Bake - got her one, and she, being the crafty little bugger that she was, asked her dad (divorced) for one too, to make SURE she got one. The result? She got two of them. Both ended up in a box in the closet after being used 2-3 times each. Then they went to the Salvation Army.
Now, keep in mind, this list is for 3 kids, not just one. But what I'm trying to say is that yes, kids want what they see on TV and hear their friends talk about - but we as parents need to remember that even though we want to give our kids what they want, and want to give them better than we had as kids ourselves...doesn't mean they have to have the latest and greatest of everything.
I realize this won't change anyone's mind about buying the latest little gadget or gizmo....just made me think about all the "new things" I bought my kids over the years...and where those things ended up after just a short period of time - and whether it was really worth it in the long run! Yes, the joy on their faces Christmas morning was wonderful to experience...but it's frustrating to add up the dollars spent on something that brought joy for such a short period of time.
Ok...you can shoot me now....

My youngest has one, it is kinda cute and annoying and hazardous at the same time! It does work on carpet, I don't know how it does with any of the toys (I can not seem to find any of the toys- she wants the car, the sleeping bag and the ball). The sound does get annoying after awhile (great for kids though)! What makes it so hazardous (for my daughter)- is that the thing basically eats hair! She was holding the hamster about five inches away from her head- a stray hair managed to get sucked into one of the wheels and that one hair managed to turn into about an inch of her hair wounded up in a wheel- not too much fun to untangle!).

Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

I have a 9 year old and a 15 year old boy and they want the latest greatest also but they dont get it because they are not the type to play with things they liek to make things and tear things apart to see how they work so I buy them the used items that way if they tear appart I am not out much... I know they are disapointed for awhile but they always get over it and when I grew up I was spoiled I got those cabbage patch dolls mentioned in the previous post and yes mom went through heck to get them for me I have about 6 of them and yes I played with them and still have them in my moms attic but the point is I was not prepared for real life when I grew up and expected everything when I wanted it and that is not how life is so I wanted to teach my boys just because you want dont mean you get.,... Sorry had to vent a little....

I found 4 of them locally. I've got 1 of each of the 4. I bought 2 at TRU and 2 at Target. I didn't even know about them until around 6 weeks ago and friends from the Midwest were freaking out about them. I guess I beat the rage over here in my small town and found them before the craziness broke out. I haven't taken them out of the boxes yet. I'm saving them for Christmas. I know I could make a huge sum on the internet but that's not why I bought them. I may only give her 2 for Christmas and save the other 2 for Easter.
The only reason why I got them is because they were easily available to me and affordable. They seem like an entertaining toy that my dd may like.

Whew! I feel better now. So glad no one I know is expecting me to get them one of these...lol-Suzanne

My youngest is still young enough to want what he sees on tv, but he doesn't get everything...just what I want him to have. He actually plays with his toys so I don't feel like I've wasted much on him over the years. He also plays with his brothers' things some of which they didn't use. I didn't pay outrageous amounts for the Zhu Zhu pets like those people on ebay want. My Mom paid the regular prices in ToyRUs and I hope that my son enjoys them. I don't have any regrets over getting them and I'm a very careful shopper. Don't have to defend myself here by any means...
