Default What do you decorate for Christmas?

Mr. Husband has finally taken the boxes out of the attic, so now I am going to take today (it's a slow work-day) and start putting them up.

I never feel as if I have enough decorations, but then again I don't have the bank of Martha Stewart, either.

We have outside lights, our Christmas tree, door wreath, stockings and a few little bowls/candles/etc throughout the house. Growing up, my mom only decorated the bathroom for each season/event. Because it was the smallest/cheapest place to decorate, she was able to go all out.

So - what do you decorate?

I have TONS of Christmas decorations. I used to go all out. I haven't decorated much since my mom died in April 2007.

We can't put a tree up because of the dogs (maybe some day). We have put up a few outdoor decorations this year (but not as many as last year). I will put out a few items around the house.

I have two tabletop metal Christmas trees that have all the Painted Pony ornaments on them. The larger one is in the living room and the smaller one is on the dining table.

as far as decorate the arches with greenery and ornaments(old and redone). the first couple of years I bought cheap bunch of poinsetta's (red and white ones)and put them on the tree and arch way along with a few painted tips of pine cones.with simple bow on top.
Now i take down pics that i have in certain places and replace with wooden xmas things or frames with pics in them.

Speaking of this, I may wrap our picture frames (none have pictures - just artwork) in wrapping paper like presents. That's a cheap decoration, right?

I decorate EVERY room in the house! I have collected many Christmas decorations over the years, so I have a place for just about every one of them....my home looks like a Christmas winter wonderland and the kids love it!

We decorate a good bit inside; tree, santas, signs, snowmen, etc... But, not so much outside. All we do outside is put garland and bows along the privacy fence that runs up to the street between our house and the neighbors, an inflatable santa, bows on the mailbox and wreaths on the windows and door.

Since we are actually in Disney World from the week before until the day after Christmas, we decorate our resort room. We put up a tree, lights around the window, Christmas clings on the window, a Christmas rug outside the door, something on the door and a few other items. Pretty much everyone in the Disney resorts does the same thing. We all go walking around to see everyone's decorations at night.

I got rid of a lot of decorations because I realize I do not need alot. Am in a one bedroom apartment. Also if I have to much out I find it hard to relax.

I do decorate my ficus tree in the livingroom instead of having a x-mas tree. I have a couple of decorations that I put out. A polar bear trivet gets put out in the kitchen. Some guests towels go in the bathroom. My bedroom windows get a decorator candle for the evenings. And I exchange the wreath on my front door. Need to add a couple more decorations to it and it will be ready. I am thinking about making some paper decorations made from origami or just use them for gift tags.

    table runner
    candles

I don't decorate much, I think other people who go all out do a wonder ful job and it is beautiful to look at.

I have a few reasons I keep the decorating to a minimun. (for another thread) I do try to keep it more of a seasonal theme. Snowmen and snowflakes cool blues ect.

In years past I have done everything up. No one really helped and seemed to care. So now that my thinking on these things have changed I do what I want. It looks festive, but not alot of work.

Check out my album - Simple Christmas - I try to use what is already out, Norfolk Island Pine is my tree, holly from the bushes for greenery. Then it all fits into one box.....and we're having a wonderful Christmas Time.....because it is about Him not the lights .....it's the light of the world!

well up to this year i go all out....i can't seem to get motivated yet...but not to rain on your parade...here's some things i do....

empty china cabinets and all glass cabinets and fill with big shiny x-mas flowers/garlands, glassware and any 'super shiny' items so that when cabinet lights are turned on it is 'magical'....

i too wrap pictures on the wall...although some of the pics i change out with x-mas themed ones... when wrapping i use a plain gold tin foil wrap (easy to do...just cover the front, wrap the edges and use scotch tape to hold on the back)...then i put a big shiny bow in the upper middle of each one...(these are bows that are tied throughout my theme and they are all over the rooms)....another alternative is not to forget about wreaths...they are cheap and you can use them all over the house...(and they are easy to 'personalize' with flower picks, ornaments, etc)....

i drape garland and add bows in the 'swags' all around all window/door frames....i also use flower 'picks' that i insert throughout the swag for color...my garlands go all the way to the floor and they are decorated all the way to the floor....

try to have just 3-4 types of bows and use them through out the theme...mine are also on the tree...which is 9ft tall, with a girth of 6ft all the way to the floor (can't put presents under)...the decor of it is quite simple, i run thick ribbons from the top of the tree to the bottom, insert gold 'flower picks' throughout the branches, add bows, (the same 'big' bows again) and only hang 3 types of bulbs...my colors are gold & burgandy....

then i suspend fishing line from the ceiling, (so you can't see it)...attach 3 white flying doves (best to use 'actual real size to make them appear 'real')...put one end of gold beaded garland in their beaks and 'drop' it onto the tree....(as if they are 'hanging' it)...i also have 2 birds 'resting' in the upper branches of the tree...the birds need to be spaced as if flying from different directions....and believe it or not it took me 3 yrs to find the 'perfect' real looking doves when this idea hit me...(and it wasn't at x-mas even when i got them)....

my chandelier has 'golden' garland intertwined thru it with a couple of beautiful ornaments hanging from...most of my garlands are 'flower' garlands as i cannot stand the shiny/tinsel looking stuff....

of course i dress up the table with lots of shiny's.....candelabra's, crystal, greenery....

and then i begin to decorate the room.... argh.... there is no space or inch that is off-limits to me... but i think the most important thing to remember is that if you are going with the intensity of 'over the top' if you aren't careful it will be over the top all right...looking just like a circus instead of a wonderful 'magic-land'.... as you acquire things thru the years try to keep in mind what you are trying to achieve and stick to a theme...(whether color, or types of items...) too much of too many things...is well...too much....

alot of what i have purchased thru the years has come from thrift stores, garage sales, clearance sales after x-mas.... and if you keep your eyes open throughout the year there are even lots of items that with a little 'tweak' can be used for x-mas decorating...

use your imagination...don't be afraid to just try something...if you don't like it...move it...and when you get things just 'perfect' do yourself a favor and take pictures to store with your x-mas items so that when you start decorating the next yr you have a 'roadmap' to follow.....

good luck and have fun with it.....

Only then will you find that money can't be eaten.”

I am not sure what or how I am going to decorate this year.
My DH and I have been married 4 years and each Christmas of those 4 years we have been in a different dwelling. The novelity of decorating a new place is wearing off.
All I know for sure is that I will put out wreath, set up the advent wreath and we are getting tree. Beyond that, we will see how I feel.

    My dh really likes Christmas.....

Outside: just simple white lights all around the house. We have large timber pillars on our front porch that are wrapped in lighted garland. A large old sled with a wreath is hung on the cross timer. Large greenery swag on the front door (my front door is RED)
Inside: We cut several fresh trees every year. A large (usually 12-13 feet) tree in the stairway entry that is all done in red/white/blue to honor our dd and SIL who are both in the military, and have been away many Christmases. This year dh got a nice yellow pine (about 7 feet) for the den/office. He is decorating it in an outdoor theme with bird ornaments, shot gun shells, fishing lures, feathers, etc. Our main family room tree is about 9 feet with our collection of ornaments from places we've visited and things we like. I have a 4 foot tree in the kitchen nook with kitchen things, cookies cutters, and tiny snow flakes.
We do lots of greenery on the banisters and on the fireplace mantle. White lights everywhere...on top the kitchen cabinets, tops of bookcases, chine cabinet, etc. with more greenery and red berry branches. I do another sled with wreath on the staircase landing wall. The colors in our home are reds, golds and greens, so it looks wonderful at Christmas.
