Warm winter sock recommendations, please
Well we just had out first snow fall. Anyway, I need to purchase some really warm winter socks. Normally I will buy the wool mens hunting socks to wear. I need socks that will keep my feet warm when I am waiting for the bus.
I saw some at Famous Footwear. The reason I am asking is I see socks advertised as extra warm for the outdoors only to find out that is not the case when I wear them outdoors.
I am looking for mostly socks that are really warm and I can get away wearing them in a business or dressier setting. Just figure there must be new technology out there that I do not know about.
Look forward to responses.

I have worn wool but dislike the bulky feeling. I bought fleece socks from LL Bean and have been pleased. I wear them over my regular socks and just take them off and put them in my purse when I arrive. I made my own out of some fleece I had. They are serviceable but not as sleek.

We just got our first cold nite - 36 degrees. I wear my "dress" socks with wool socks over them and take the wool off when needed.
I agree, there probably is newer technology out there, but I don't have it as of yet.

I like the Thinsulate brand. Do you have a Sportsman's Warehouse store there? They carry some good brands. When I was flying a lot (aka outside and it's -25) I wore socks from the Army-Navy store...in combo with my boots I stayed plenty warm.

My dh swears by Menara (sp) wool blend. He says as long as the blend doesnt' include cotton they will wick away moisture which causes your feet to get cold. He was reading in hishunting magazine that if you're going to be ut any length of timein the cold to use deodorant, not antipersperant , on the bottoms of your feet and use this blend of socks. He wears them with his insulated boots, also not too insulated or you're feet will sweat, and he works outside 10 hours a day and his feet are never cold. They work kinda like the under armor shirts you can buy

I purchase womens wool socks in a bundle (comes in a navy group and a black/charcoal group) from Sam's Club. I also have some I've knit.
I'd also suggest a pair of Cougar boots http://www.walkingonacloud.com/xq/as...9/qx/Brand.htm. They have a special sole that helps keep feet warm, as well as Thermolite insulation.

Thanks everyone for the answers. I will keep an eye out for the thinsulate socks. There is a Harry's Army store around here that I will look into. I do have two different pairs of boots that will keep the wet out. Just remember previous years when I was warm everywhere else except my feet waiting for the bus.

Smartwool.com has some cute stuff AND they are machine washable. We really like what we purchased from them. HTH.

Nothing keeps my feet warmer than my hand knit wool socks. They are not bulky, I can pick whatever color I want, AND custom fit them to my feet

I use the dollar store fleece like socks. I wear them over my white gym socks and remove the extra layer and tuck them into my boots until its time to put them back on when I go home or back outside.
Have you tried a runners store? I know some runners run all year round and don't want bulky socks either...I think thats where some of the newer technology may be.2012: The Year Of The Purge!
