Default Please Pray for my Grandma

I went to visit my grandparents in their nursing home on this cold & blustery morning. When I got there (shortly after 9 a.m.) I found my grandma in bed. Usually she's sitting in her wheelchair and greets us as we come in. I started talking to her and asking her questions, and she wouldn't answer. Her eyes were open and she was looking around a little, but she wasn't "there". I knew immediately there was something wrong. I went to ask a staff member knowing that they can't provide me with much information because I'm not the POA. The lady told me that during breakfast they noticed there was something wrong so they put her in bed. She's been looked at briefly by someone, and they think it may be constipation. (When I heard that I wasn't happy because she's not responding "because she's constipated" ...How stupid!) I asked her if they track her bowel movements, and she said yes. The lady also told me that she has a temperature of 38 degrees so they've given her Tylonel and they're trying to contact the family.

I immediately went to get the three kids together to leave and phone my aunt and dad (who are both their POAs). Deep down I knew that my grandma has suffered from a stroke. I said good-bye to my grandma and that I'd visit again very soon then started leaving. On my way out there were two other staff members. They looked concerned. I asked them for details knowing that they too probably won't provide much. Of course, they told me that they couldn't tell me anything. I told them that I understood that but if they could tell me if one of the side effects of a stroke is 'not being coherant'. One of the ladies told me that they couldn't tell me and that if I wanted that information I'd have to see a nurse. I told her that I didn't have time and that I needed to contact my dad and aunt immediately so they could get more information. When one of the two staff members walked away I told the other lady that I thought my grandma had suffered from a stroke. She said not to tell anyone that she said it but 'so did she'.

Please pray for my grandma at this time. I'm not necessarily wanting her to live many more years, but I want her to leave this world comfortably and in no pain. When she takes her last breath in life, I know that her home is in Heaven where her Lord and Saviour is. She accepted His gift of salvation in her twenties and has followed Him ever since. But, when she goes...I'll miss her.

I'll post more details once I hear back from my dad and aunt.

Coming your way. Sounds like a stroke on this end. Why didn't they call a doctor in or transport her? Regardless of age I'd have been mad. Not right, not right at all. Keep us posted and will be thinking of her and you. Hugs long distance QM

As per the staff, the doctor will be 'in' tomorrow. Plus they 'think it's constipation so they're going to give her a laxative'. Doesn't sound like constipation in my books. Perhaps if they check their records they could figure out if it really is.

My aunt went to visit my grandma as soon as she got the news. I should hopefully know more soon. She said that she'd keep me updated.

Sending prayers your way because your in Canada the rules are probably different than in US Here if you are a family member they will disclose med condition you dont have to be POA however that said if your family POA has signed a dnr dni they will not transport you out to the hospital that being said the constipation theory is outrageous. Sending lots of hugs your way

They can't tell you if it is a stroke or if they think it is a stroke, but they can tell you they think it is constipation? I'd be all over that logic!! Anyway your Grandma is in my thoughts and prayers. Please let us know what you find out. BTW is sounds like a stroke to me also.

I've never heard of constipation causing you to be incoherent...stupid! Hope your Grandma is okay. My professional opinion would be a stroke.

Sorry to hear about this - sending prayers her way. I have had many great aunts go into nursing care, but fortunately it wasn't for long. I also didn't want their quality of life to deteriorate and for them to suffer.
