Default How is your STATE doing in this recession ?

NY is in a budget crisis right now.
Governor Paterson is saying that the state is out of money and reduction in payments is needed, so the debts can continue to be paid. Which is trickle down effect. Now our county is crying the blues because if the state money does not come in January, then they will be short on money. They are saying they may want the town's share of the 8 % sales tax, so they can keep the county going. Would be a IOU for the towns.
There is a hiring freeze on new state workers.
Tonite's paper says NY is out of unemployment money...what is being paid out now is coming from federal money.
Many cuts happening. Not good at all.

Our state was screwed before the financial crisis ever hit. The politicians that were elected made sure of that.

HAH. That's how it's doing. Chrysler (related companies) just laid off a service call center full of people as of FEb. but notices went out today. (prob. wrapped in a xmas card). Food pantries have doubled requests and many peoples benefits will run out soon. I look in my pantry as if it's a magic vault of safety. I am so glad I can cook and repair clothes, budget and have this site to teach me even more.!!

IF they were spending their own money things would be soooo different, but when they get everything and more paid for by our tax dollars; they don't care!!! THEY are the ones who NEED to be looking at this site for the future of our country!!

Maybe the states ought to hit up the CEO's for some of their bonus money.

Maybe the US ought to stop sending money overseas to "help" out other countries.

Maybe the government ought to create some "real" jobs instead of making committees to "oversee" the creation of jobs. Opps...that is the new jobs...Washington ( suit and tie ...no blue collar there ).

Maybe the next stimulous money ought to be given to the people to spend and pick up the economy. Pay their house payment, car payments etc. Oh crap, I forgot, if they did that then Pelosi's $30,000,000.00 field mouse might not be "saved".

How is our state doing? Read my posts...another man was in the business today and said he's had no work and he's walking away from his home cause they are going to get it anyway. Going out of state.

Florida is in the top 3 foreclosure states in the US along with California and Nevada. You can't get a job at McDonalds or Walmart. This county is wanting to raise property taxes...problem is pretty soon no one is going to be living on the property. In August there were 1982 foreclosures and 1972 homeless people that had lived in apartments. This does not count the homeless from owning houses. This is only 1972 people that have asked for help and known of. If they haven't asked for help they aren't in that number. There are people living in Walmarts parking lot in their car with kids. Walmart runs them off and they move to Publix and come back. They have no where to go. There are people living in the woods. Some have tents, some don't.

Ask our government and they will say it is getting better...unemployment is down somewhat...foreclosures are less...Why then were there 29,533 bankruptcy filings in the third quarter alone this year in Florida?

Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

I am not a very political person (meaning that I try to keep my views to myself) but I will say I am getting weary of feeling humiliated every time the news comes on and someone in Detroit govenments has
-refused to pay back a debt (think mayor)
-Is taking his bonus because it's in his contract (think big three)
-Are fighting at meetings like little children (think city councel)
-Have sold city assests for Garage sale prices (think pontiac silverdome and prob. Cobo)
And on and on. I am embarassed by proxy. We live an honest clean life and work hard for all we get. Share when we dare. I have to say I am glad my kids are almost out of the school system and that we are close to paying off our house. But I wonder how not to feel like a fool for doing the right thing??

    What recession?

Our state keeps cutting taxes and still has more money than it can spend, so they just keep piling up a huge rainy day fund.

We have a major labor shortage and the lowest unemployment in the country.

The county I live in loss a few thousand jobs way before the recession started. This area is the home to the Bassett furniture, Hooker furniture, American furniture, etc I was told that during the great depression, there wasn't a depression in this county due to the jobs and old money. Now, things have changed. The old money people still control the town so there isn't any growth or development going on. 25 miles down the road in the next county there are a few jobs and major develop going on.
My state is broke though. My county has an extremely high unemployment rate. No one has to look for jobs because there aren't any. I work in a hospital just over the state line in NC and my hospital is broke. No one has insurance but there is still sickness and accidents.

Yea, curious on that too. Only thing I can think of is so violently cold no one wants to live there and those that do are spread out. I'd like to know also.

Seriously, Some of my DH's distant relatives are from there. I have the best picture of his family sitting in a wagon w/ cows hooked up to it. Not oxen, not horses. Cows. When ever he picks on my family I just say. Cows.
