When I was growing up, my grandmother had a few pieces of furniture that was made by rolling up newspapers tightly, then gluing them all together. Not sure what the name of this process is, but I was very impressed with it.

ladytoysdream,
I've never heard of rolled up newspapers as furniture. That is VERY interesting. I'd love to see that! Was it just your Grandmother, or have you seen that type of furniture elsewhere? I wonder if it was an art form from your area? It's amazing how creative we can be when we need to be.~~~

It was my mother's mother. Not sure if it had anything to do with them being Polish. It was 2 pieces of small furniture that were being used. Maybe something to do with the depression era.
My mom was one of 7 children. Her real Dad died. Her mom remarried a man with 5 kids. He got killed the first day on a new job in a factory. She ended up raising 12 kids. She had to be frugal and creative.
I don't remember any other such pieces. Course when one is little, a lot of things you don't pay attention to.--------My signature--------

shoiji,
Yes, I remember the cardboard furniture. I had a cardboard dresser. It was pretty heavy duty and was covered in a shiny light blue paper on the outside. Had plastic drawer knobs. I used it as my bedside table. It was used when I got it , I'm thinking 70's??? I also had several under the bed boxes and a bigger dresser that I purchased new, which were not nearly as sturdy but still worked. I haven't seen them in stores for many years, I think plastic replaced them.~~~

I just found the idea of furniture made from newspaper so intriguing I had to do a search. I can see these in a room, given the right decor.

These are really creative. You could do all kinds of things, even slip cover them! Or how about painting them to look like bamboo, now that would be neat.
