    Default Hail in Hawaii

    What a strange weather morning!!

Although our dark drapes were drawn tight in our bedroom this morning, the bright flashing lights at 6:00 AM still woke me up. Went to the LR windows to see lightening and hear thunder booming all around - no rain. It was amazing - we hardly ever get thunder and lightening here!!

About 6:30, I thought the rains had started - and that we had a leak in our ceiling. DH jumped out out bed, ran to the LR - and with a grin on his face announce "I'ts hail!! Let's go outside!!"

So we did - hail almost as big as dimes!! Go figure!! And then the heavens opened!! Very exciting!! It's now passed - what a great way to wake up.

OBTW - on the TV - The National Wether Service is announcing a severe storm for Maui for the next hour with winds over 55 mph and reports of hail!! Storm has already passed us by - it's 7:15 now.

Just had to share our strange weather.

Stay safe Maui! And hail is exciting, glad you enjoyed your morning wake up call!

Too bad it didn't turn to snow MM! That would have been cool. Didn't you know you shouldn't be standing outside in a hailstorm! You could of hurt your noggin! Glad you enjoyed it though!

Yeow MM. That would have been something with the winds. Can take hail - but hate the winds -YUK!

Hail this time of year can be pretty - in the summer, not so much.

    Take care during your storms.

Hope we aren't getting our 'jet stream' up from you guys right now - I don't want the storm.

It's all clear here now - heading south and east of us to the larger part of the island.

Didn't see any of our neighbors up or out - too bad they missed it!!

I called my MIL on Kauai to see if they had any and it took the longest time for her to figure out what I was talking about - hail is not often used here!! LOL!!

Going outside to see hail at 6:3o in the morning? The only thing I really want to see at that time is the inside of my eyelids!

The weather everywhere has been interesting lately. We've been getting way too much rain for my liking. Would gladly take some of Madhen's snow....yeah, I could use a snow day

I couldn't sleep - had no idea what all that light was - could have been aliens landing for all I knew!! Really strange for our quiet little neighborhood!!

Here are my hailstorms to date:

1968 - June Medicine Bow Wyoming
    1982 - May Japan
    2009 - December Maui

    Three different land masses.

Sorry, had to laugh at this part....it reminded me of when I worked for the Dept. of Justice and this man kept calling and claiming that aliens were using microwaves to get into his brain. He was serious. Funny, but sad at the same time I guess.

I grew up seeing thunder and lightening and hail quite a bit, so I guess I'm just used to it and don't get very excited when I see it. What I do still get excited over is rainbows. In Hawaii, they were an everyday occurrence and I just loved them. We see rainbows here only occasionally....so beautiful...always make me smile

LB - I agree about the rainbows - somehow they always make me feel special - everytime I see them and I love the visitors pulling off the road to take pictures!! Actually - I prefer them to pull off the road to take pictures of anything!!

Doesn't have to be 'visitors' As long as they pull over, out of harms way and not blocking anyone...I'm all for it. It's all about safety...oh and grabbing that awesome pic!

How wonderful to experience a weather anomaly.

We have our fair share of hail here in Kansas. We held the record for the largest hail stone for a number of years -

"...a circumference of 17.5 inches (44.5 centimeters), and it was found in Coffeyville, Kansas, on September 3, 1970..."

We've seen such powerful hail storms they have to bring out snow plows to remove several inches of hail from the roads.

In 1990, when our daughter was attending the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS), there was a horrific hail storm. She was riding a bus on campus when it hit. A young woman (student), who had been walking on the sidewalk looked to be in total shock. The bus driver stopped the bus and grabbed the woman and pushed her into the bus to save her from being injured from the hail, where she started screaming and sobbing, "WHAT IS IT, WHAT IS IT?" That poor student had never experienced hail before. Our daughter was studying atmospheric science at the time, so when she got the woman calmed down, she explained the phenomenon of hail to her, after which she said if that was hail, then she hoped she would never see a tornado (which we are also famous for).

Hail is a cool phenomenon, until it punches dents all over the car. Been there, done that, as they say.

My only alarming hail experience was in an apartment years ago. It was a loft, and my bed was almost directly under a skylight. The first preciptation we had after moving was a middle of the night hailstorm. I couldn't have been out the bed faster had there been an eject button. It sounded like they were shelling the beaches. I've never heard such a racket. When my heart stopped pounding I enjoyed it but it was definitely a rude awakening.

The 'hail storm' made the front page of the Maui News today!! There was even a picture!!

When DD moved to the mainland for college, she called to ask what the 'hard rain' was!! We still tease her!!
