Do I -LOOK- Stupid???
I went out this morning to the grocery store for a few items to get us through the weekend.
In a cart was some Christmas items marked 2/$1. I spied some of the 'fancier' chocolates in there and bought 2 thinking it would make a nice addition to little Diva's NYE celebration.
After checking out, I was reaching in to my bag to pay. I glanced up and noticed a $5.00 purchase. As far as I could recall, nothing I bought was that much, so I asked the cashier what the charge was for... she looked at the screen then clucked (yes, clucked) at me...
her: it's for the chocolate
me: they are marked fifty cents each
her: they're two for five
her: (to the bagger) get me the chocolate
her: (holding the chocolate and running her finger across the price tag like a teen Vanna and in a voice most sarcastic) See... two for five
me: (holding my hand out until she gives me the chocolate) It's marked 50 cents
her: (to the manager) *cluck* I need a void
her: (after manager is out of her earshot) it's only $4, what is the big deal?
me: (in the managers earshot) It's my $4. It may not seem like a lot to you, but if every time you worked, they shorted you $4, eventually it would be a big deal to you too...
All she had to do was change the price... her little sarcastic display accomplished nothing. She never apologized to me, but I did see the manager walking back over to her as I was leaving.
I've shopped there for a very long time (longer than I want to admit because it will make me sound ancient
) I rarely complain about the service because most of the time it's okay...
I must have LOOKED stupid today, maybe that's why she felt the need to speak down to me...

Wow, I think I'd be having a word with the manager WITHIN her earshot.

No you didn't look stupid.
Cashier did that to me a while back. A $9.00 item came up $13.00.
I said you can keep it. She was very put off that I just didn't spend the extra $4.00.To be One With The Universe In Spirit, Mind and Body

I would have marched right up the manager, and told him/her what the cashier said!! How rude.

I would have called for the manager AT the register. I HAVE called for the manager at the register. I will CONTINUE calling for the manager at the register. Not because of a mistake but because of the attitude.

I too would have asked the manager to come over and had a talk with him at the register about her attitude. I understand a mistake on the price, but attitude is never a mistake!

Sheesh! How hard is it to adjust the price and be courteous? Sorry you had to deal with such a rude employee and hope the manager did the right thing.

Wow...what ever happened to customer service? Holy cow.
If I spoke to a customer on the phone that way, I'd get written up.
Let's take this and apply it to MY work scenario (we sell large, expensive industrial machines):
Me: your order total is $235,648
Cust: wait, I didn't want the reversing fan - take that off.
Me: are you kidding? It's only $5,950! What's the big deal??
Cust: never mind. I'll go to (insert competitor's name here).
yeah...that would go over well. I'm sure I'd see a big ol' bonus in my next check. In the form of a pink slip!

Her attitude really would have burned me up if I were you. There are too many people out there who are unemployeed who would be happy to fill her shoes and do it with a pleasant attitude.
Not everyone belongs in a job working with the public. Maybe she'd do better at some farm work, maybe mucking stalls for a living, if nothing else that would give her attitude an adjustment. Hard labor has a way of tempering bad attitudes, seen it over and over.~~~

I have no problem asking to see the manager right then and there. If they want me to spend my money in THEIR store, then they can treat me as if they value me as a customer...plain and simple.

I would have had her call the manager over. I have. We have over 25% unemployment here and people still have that attitude. A cashier was rude to me the other day and I said. " If you don't want your job I'll take it for my teenage DD, she would appreciate it." I laughed to myself. She looked like she swallowed her tongue.

I no longer ask cashiers to correct their mistakes. I check my receipt once I get out of the store, if there are errors I go back into the store to the courtesy desk, get the errors corrected and get the difference back plus up to 10x the error amount or $5.00 which ever is less. If they make those types of mistakes in MI in the retail sector they pay for it.
