Black-eyed peas for New Years, anyone?
Not Fergie, Will.I.Am and the rest of the band, I'm talking about the real bean. Who else on FV consumes black-eyed peas for good luck on New Years Day? Knowing the history behind this tradition, I'm thinking this is mainly a Texas (and Southern U.S.) practice, but I'm curious how many others have had their black-eyed peas today?

We did! South Texans, here. I even used the cans...yes, I used canned black eyed peas as the base (*blush*)...as part of a cute little gift idea. I posted about it on another forum here... the Green Living one, I think it was...and on my blog (address in my signature).

I don't typically eat them because I am not a fan. However, I really really need good luck this year so I broke down and ate some this evening.

We did and of course had Cabbage and Hog Jowl to go with it. I couldn't imagine a New Years Day without it!

I'm middle-aged, was born and raised in Alabama, and I only heard of this tradition a couple of years or so ago. I like them okay, but don't believe in luck.

I was born and raised and have always lived in the South, and we always have black-eyed peas, some greens (I like turnip greens), and some kind of pork. I usually fix pork chops. It's a delicious meal.

Well, that depends upon how you look at it.
I look at it as a fairly healthy and frugal way to start the year (as opposed to store bought pizza, cookies, fried chicken...). It cost me about $1 to feed six people and we will have leftovers (vs $15-20 had we had other foods). The important thing is to keep it up all year. So IMO from that point of view it DOES promote health and wealth. Will a magical fairy come and fill our bank account and heal us from all disease? No. Will we be healthier by eating this way? Yes. Will our bank account notice it? Yes.

We ate it here ( at least the adults did)
From the bag (cooked in the crock pot)
served with brown rice, cheese, onions
It is a tradition here in my family and fun to do.

We always have lasagna (don't know why, I just made it one year and it stuck.) and black eyed peas for New Years Day. Although I don't believe in luck, the black eyed peas for the New Year are a long tradition in our family. We don't eat them any other time of the year and it's just kinda fun to stick with tradition.
