    Smile Vehicle Oil Change ?

I was thinking while I was getting my oil changed today, is this Frugal?

I got the synthetic, I want my vehicle to last awhile, so my cost was $63.

Then I used a $10 coupon to bring my cost down to $53.

Plus I got a free car wash.

This was done at a Jiffy-Hoffman, in upstate NY.

I am under a warranty, and prefer to get my vehicle done by a pro and keep my documentation, or I would just change the oil myself, which would be the most Frugal way to do it.

So how much do you pay?
Where do you get your oil done?
Where do you think is the best place to go for an oil change?
Do the freebies actually end up being free?

    Thanx

DH changes our oil but he is a mechanic. I learned how to change mine in my car in December. One thing I wanted to know how to do myself. There is nothing to it. One thing is you have to make sure your car takes synthetic oil and if there is synthetic oil already in your vehicle. To change my oil costs about $12 but DH gets the oil and filter at dealers cost.

Best Friend is an ASE Mechanic. So I invite him to dinner and he changes my oil. Dinner for both of us usually runs $40.00.

Wow. When we bought the Saturn they gave us 10 cards for $15. oil changes. I'll wash my own car in the driveway.
At the Al'sQuick Lube it costs about $22. but I got a frequent customer card. It gets me 15% off and a free one after so many.
Every 3 months at $15x4=$60.+tx. So $22.x 15%=3.30 so $18.70x4= $74.80 + tx. So we pay about $134.00+ tx + oil reclaim fee per year on 2 vehicles. How long does this synthetic oil last??

I used to do mine as a teenager but that was 1 thing i decided as an adult. It's not worth it for me. I don't want to get a oil filter wrench. You still have to pay reclaimation. Gone are those bad days of driveway dumping. I don't want to get filthy. It looks better for car resale. Accidents can happen. I don't have ramps anymore. Plus certainly NOT w/ a foot of snow on the ground. I do advise you know how to do it though. U-tube has a video for EVERYTHING.

I do my own, NOT synthetic and I am ANAL about my truck. The standard DINO oil will not break down that much if you are changing your oil every 3000 miles.
If you do your own, track the mileage and keep all your oil reciepts if you wish. The dealership or mfg would have to prove your oil or lack of oil changes caused any problem.

To back my statements up, our minivan had over 265000 miles on it and the reason we got rid of it is because the trans was shot and the sliding door was severely rusted at the hinges. (hazzardous) We changed the oil in that van about every 3500-5000 miles. No engine related issues.

Note I am not saying that synthetic is NOT a better oil, it probably is but IMO it will not gain you "much" longevity.

300000 miles equals 100 oil changes.

$20 to change it in your driveway = $2000

Assume $53 for your oil change = $5300

when I change my filter i use a sheet of sand paper instead of buying a oil filter wrench, works every time.

It costs about $35 locally. I get coupons for anywhere from $5 to $10 off that price, and I can usually get Valvoline and Jiffy Lube to take each others coupon. Sometimes I hit their $15 early bird special. Sometimes I get free oil changes at my mechanic, because the shop has been handling our car for 10 years now and we are good customers.

I don't think our car has ever been through a car wash, except at the dealership. Waste of money, IMO. And in our neighborhood it doesn't pay to have a shiny car that stands out. Not like a 10 yr old station wagon would anyway.

I think it runs about 29 locally, but this summer at our town days they had an auction and an item was 8 oil change in a 2 year time, bought those for 50 and got to so 16 oil changes for $100= $6.25 and I am hoping they have more this summer again!!
It is done at the dealership 9 miles away

So how much do you pay? Around $30
Where do you get your oil done? at the dealership
Where do you think is the best place to go for an oil change? For us, it's at the dealership.
Do the freebies actually end up being free? Never

~Dh used to take the car to Jiffy Lube but I thought their $35 price was outrageous. We didn't want to do it ourselves so we paid.
A few years ago they built a BJ's near us and it has a Monro Muffler attached. They regularly send us coupons for $16-$19 oil changes. I think that's more than fair!
You can see here if they have a location near you: http://www.monro.com/store_locator.cfm ~

    Thank You all!!!

I guess JL really isnt frugal then, I like the receipt idea, and in the long end will dave the most money.

I guess when I want to splurge I can go buy a booklet for the carwash!!!

nuisance26 - Monro Muffler - Good call forgot all about them..

See you all on the Frugal Side!!!!
