I hope I fixed it!!!
I have been going back and forth between my husbands computer (which he has graciously lent me until mine is fixed) and mine today trying to get this darned thing fixed. I have been working on it (on and off, while taking care of the kiddos, of course) since around 10 this morning. So far I have found trojans, worms, a backdoor, dll issues, not to mention other adware, spyware, malware and other registry issues. AAAAHHHHHGGGGG!!!!! I have no idea how this happened, as this is my first foray into trying to fix something computer-related myself.
With the recent "belt-tightening", we decided we each had to give up something. For me it was getting the computer professionally fixed. For my husband, it was getting the new tv mount he wanted. We were going to use the Christmas money to each get something we wanted (the only reason we were spending money "unnecessarily"), however that went out the window with the recent job thing.
Anyway, so now I am resolve to get this thing fixed so I can do all my stuff again. Although he let me use the computer, it doesn't hook up to my printer, and I don't have all my homeschool stuff on it. So here I go. First I did a system boot clean. Then I downloaded and ran an antivirus. Then I downloaded and ran an antimalware, then an antispyware. now I am on the registry clean. This is the only one that has me scared. i am about to re-boot and see if it worked. Wish me luck - and hope I come back for an update in about 10 minutes!!!

Oh, I forgot, I also did a "disk cleanup" and a "disk defragment", whatever those are. I think it's fixed. WOOHOO!!! First of all, it's about 10 times faster than it has been. Shut down and restart would have taken me 10 minutes before this. Second, it was all FREE. THANK YOU to all those freeware people out there - they are truly AWESOME.
Third, I pray it sticks. I mean, it's been up for less than a minute, but no warnings, etc. so far. Of course this is the first place I go to when I turn on my computer... LOL I need to check my other programs.

Congratulations on learning how to do the computer maintenance yourself! Now you don't have to pay the professional. Do all those things regularly and you'll stay up and running from now on.
That's one of the nice things about Windows 7, it does the disk defrag, disk cleanup and registry clean for me and at practically lightning speed. (I got a new laptop for an early xmas present)“When you get to the end of all the light you know
and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown,
faith is knowing that one of two things will happen:
you will be given something solid to stand on,
or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller
“Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
there are signs that the world is speedily
coming to an end;
bribery and corruption are common; children no
longer obey their parents;
every man wants to write a book and the
end of the world is evidently approaching.”
— From a translation of an inscription on
an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Computer problems suck!!! I spent more than 2 days messing around with this one last weekend! It would only let me boot in safe mode. Did you run your check disc to check for any errors on the disc itself? I ran a disc check after I did a bunch of other junk and it took almost 2 hours but luckily the disc didn't have any errors that the puter couldn't fix.
I have no clue what I did to fix it, but it's working now."Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans." John Lennon

This happened to me last week. The msn people had me reformat my hardrive to a previous date where all these problems did not start happening. Also had me do one extra step that I forget what it was. But it was an extra step to make sure everything was taken off.
Agree with you that trying to fix a computer while taking care of other things is very frustrating and annoying. If it happens again try to call the software company that you use. Hopefully they can help you.

Thanks - I hadn't thought of that! this time it would have been useless, as there were so many problems stemming from me not taking care of the computer. I still have one .dll error that comes up from time to time, but I think I did the system clean before I used (then deleted the piece of *rap) the program it came from. Other than that, I am still up and running!

It is called the Internet Security 2010 and is an insidious little bug. I had the fun of getting it over the weekend. There are several sites if you can google it that give step by step instructions how to debug it. I thought all my homeschool pdfs were goners (the girls' math & phonics programs), but was able to get them back. The crazy thing was that it was able to get around updated, constantly running, anti-virus and anti-spyware programs.
This is the second bug in three months and has made me re-think how much I depend on the computer for stuff and I may go back to hard copy books for homeschooling and paper bills, so it isn't so stressful and scary when something like this happens.Amy

It's the same for me. I pay bills online, I do most of our schoolwork from pdf's or online sources... I am not sure I could do it with all hardcopies, although I do sometimes print out sections of the pdf's. Problem is I cant print them all at once, it stresses out the print cartridges.
I like this happy computer icon.
I am too reliant on my computer and was lost without it!
