Default Need some help finding a color

Hi FV! We're re-doing the kid's bedrooms, and this is the set that my 17 YO girl picked out (see link below). Apparently check patterns are very in this year because she and her friends oohed and aahed over it. OK, I gave in because if she must, she must and you're only 17 once, right? But anyway there's paint to be picked out, and we can't seem to find another color to "accent" it all. To me it's too monotonous just using the teal and black. The duvet cover is reversable, which helps, but it's still mainly teal and black.

I was thinking an apple green color might be cute, but she's not crazy about that idea. The woodwork and doors are white, and her carpeting is light grey. She picked out a mini crystal chandelier, which I love for the "girly" aspect of it. (see link below) She picked out solid teal sheets, but she needs window treatments. I do have 2 pairs of black lace panels that I got off freecycle, so thought I could use those. Her curtain rod is white wood and so are her blinds. Do you think I should add a valance in another color to "soften" the black?

But anyway, I know you ladies out there are very creative, and truth be told, I'm totally stumped on this one Does anybody have any ideas? Oh, and I love to do an accent wall as well. Lololol!!!

    Appreciate any and all ideas!!

I'd go with a light grey wall with maybe a pink tie back on the curtains, pillows, etc.

I wouldn't stay too close to the teal and black check, in two years she will want something more sophisticated.

I'd go with a pearly grey (not cold) on the walls. I wouldn't worry about 'softening' the black because she'll be on to something else in 2 years.

I agree! Pink would be a nice colour to add, and it goes well with teal. Just dont do Pepto pink. Ahh to be 17 again... I had dusty rose walls and white furniture and no stretch marks or gray hair....

I think pale gray walls sound good with the gray carpeting.
Look at the colors in the accents pillows that were on the link and let her pick out one or two that she likes - I personally like the bright red - but let her choose.
For the curtains, look at the ones on the link - maybe you could find something similar (white background with blue and/or black print) for less money.
Good luck and post a picture when it's done.

Agree with the pink idea. Only I would use a rich saturated hot pink. Basically as an accent color. Since the teal and black are both rich colors. Use it as ties backs on the curtains. One or two small pillows on bed. Maybe a small throw rug on the floor. As a lamp shade on a lamp. You could probably also use a silver or canary yellow instead of pink. Your daughter may just want a non-girly room. Basically a flat sheet could be used to make the tie backs, pillows, and to cover a lamp shade.

Look at the link you gave for the comforter. Take a good look at the wall where the window is. You will notice the wall changes color depending on which side the comforter is up. It is a slight variation of white. Don't forget you do not have to paint walls or all the walls. One accent wall will look just as good.

I have to agree with the choice of a shade of gray...since her carpet is light I would go with a darker shade...maybe the color Dusty Miller is (the plant).

Are you getting the accent pillow shown? If you are you could always go with a shade of red to accent the curtains. Of course since you are looking to soften the room red might not do that...but, it is a color that can accent teal & black.

At first when I read your post I thought of light pink, yellow or grey - even a blue, not baby blue, not dark nor vibrant lol I hope you know what I mean? OOh kinda like the bathroom in the pic!

Now that I see how vibrant the colours are for the duvet (chandeliers mighty cute too!) I'd opt to stick to white just like they've shown it on the website.

As for accents - stick with the same vibrancy as the colours in the zebra striped pillow - they will be just that - accents. You can buy funky coloured pic frames to hang stuff on the wall at Ikea or Big Lots no? Lil things like that - no need to paint the walls/fames with an accent colour.

I think her comforter is cute. I have a few ideas...

    1) She's 17, she will be off to college (or just too 'grown' to want a kid-looking room)

    2) She's like the rest of us and bound to change her mind.

NOW... for my ideas... HERE is a link with color wheel complimentary colors

For walls, a shimmering pearl white. The wall opposite her bed can be the softening wall (and easier to paint over when she changes her mind) I would go with the greenish color.

For curtains, I would get creative and MAKE the curtains and paint them! (okay, you can buy white curtains and do this too) and somewhere, (top, middle, bottom, doesn't matter) paint (with fabric paint) teal and black squares (like the comforter) and paint a stripe of the complimentary colors above and below the blocks. It gives DD (and her friends) something to do and feel more 'part' of the room.

For accent pillows, copy the colors from the curtains in any design she wants.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

    Wink

I knew I could count on the FV to inspire me. {{hugs}} I wasn't expecting so many replies filled with so many varied ideas, but I gotta tell ya, it's got me psyched (did i say psyched? talk about showing my age..haha) But anyway, we're talking over the choices, and she doesn't want an accent wall after all, but she did say she loves the idea of accenting throughout the room with alot of the colors suggested here. I am though, hitting a brick wall (no pun intended ) with the paint color for the walls. She said she wants the walls also to be teal blue, but in a lighter shade. Personally, I really love the idea of pearl grey, but no changing her mind Oh well! It is her room after all and I'll just have to live with it.

So tell me please in you most honest opinion....what do you think of painting the ceiling in an accent, but fairly subtle color? Think that's going overboard? Her room has 2 side by side windows, but it's centered between 2 other rooms, so not very well lighted from outside. Not sure that matters, but ya never know. I thought about painting the woodwork maybe, as an alternative to the ceiling idea. Any more thoughts, please?

A couple of goodies to mention on this>> Lowes is having geat timing for me, and their offeing a $5 rebate on their gallon cans Valspar, which btw is hubby's fave brand. Also, I'm going down into Orlando to shop at Ikea, Home-Goods, etc. We don't have neat stores like that around here , so I'm really excited about going and finding some bargain treasures

So thanks everyone. Remember though, I am still open to any more ideas out there, so please keep 'em coming!

Hopefully I'll survive ~lol~, and this will be done in 4-6 weeks. We're doing my 15 YO's 1st, and fortunately, his will be alot easier But I'll keep you posted. If I get some help, I'll try to get some pics too

peridot green, apple green. stark white trim.
what would roger on "sell this house" do?
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.
