oh i so agree and that is why i plan on stocking up and having at least 6 months worth of food in place in the next few months...

Dh is going to finish off a cabinet that we put our trash can in...however he is going to finish it off and put shelves in so i can use it as a makeshift pantry...

We may eat ramen noodles, soup etc...however we will not starve...

Buy fresh and local. Grow your own if possible. And think about the "old days" when the food budget was a third of the paycheck. And the food was not as interesting as what we have now.

I did some major grocery shopping last week at Kroger. They had some great sales and I actually had a few coupons.

I went to Kroger yesterday to buy one thing that I was missing for a recipe and looked around while I was there. The prices on most things I looked at had gone up 25 cents, 50 cents, $1!!!

I am SO thankful that I have a well stocked pantry, fridge, and freezer. I am also glad I discovered my local grocery salvage stores last year. I can pretty much shop the loss leaders.

Default Yes this year....we plan on putting in a huge garden...

This year we plan on putting in a huge garden and doing alot of canning. My daughter and i are not very huge meat eaters and the rest of the family have become accustomed to it. Dh gets his fill of meat every once in a while but it is just way to expensive....

Food prices always go up every year, with a few of them coming down. Our supply obviously does have a lot to do with the weather and the freeze in Florida definitely doesn't help the orange production.

But, the article was talking about the UK and about them getting supplies from Spain and the US. I think most of us here at the Village will do okay even if what is happening in the UK happens here...many of us have stockpiles that will carry us for a few months at the least.

Plus, spring is coming and many do plant gardens. I don't, but my dd plants a huge garden that supplies all of us with fresh veggies in season and supplies her with enough to can.

Even though I would rather have fresh or frozen produce, am glad I stocked up on canned veggies at shoprite. If the sale is still going on next week will stock up some more.

Can't tell you how greatful I am that I have a good stockpile and freezer is filled. Really putting it to use this month.

The rising everything that we have to get used to can be very stressful. Fortunately there is this site available to share information.

Grapes were $3. a pound in my area before the freeze.
    Wonder what they are now.
They were so high in price Aldi's did not even have any when I was in there.

I work in the school cafeteria and they are not getting us grapes or strawberries until the prices go down.

Well, January is notorius for a big hike in prices. Meijer had a killer sale this week on dry goods. Buy 10/$10. get 11th free. They also had baby carrots, good brand pop, onions and potatoes on the sale.
Also Kroger had a super great campbell soup sale 10/$10. and there were coupons around too.
i love having a stockpile but wish i had more land for renewable sources like chickens, berries,a large garden and a woodpile.

I have noticed that the prices in my area have risen quite dramatically, not just on food but everything.

Tonight my son was looking for a belt at Wal-mart. Above the belts there was a new (You could tell they were just done, they were clean and crisp, and there was the old stickers edges peeking out the sides) price sticker with the price for each row of belts. As my son started moving the belts to find one his size he noticed there was a stocking sticker for each belt, they had the UPC#, the year, and a price. upon further investigation he matched the UPC# with the belt in the rack and compared the price. The discovery was shocking to say the least, the tag read the year 2009 and the price for each belt had risen almost $6 dollars. That's a pretty big jump for sure.

Our medications took a MAJOR jump in price.

Grapes this weekend were $4.98, and oranges were a $1 a piece before the cold snap, I have not priced them since. Skinless chicken breast was $8 a pound, now that's crazy!

For us the only solution is to buy what's on sale, use coupons and shop salvage. That said there has been a major slow down in my ability to add to our stockpile these past few months, which tells me my dollar is not going quite as far despite my frugal shopping. It does worry me, we depend on our stockpile in lean weeks.

Polly! My mouth literally dropped open when I read those prices on food. How on earth does a person find a way to afford to eat even? I know things are going up, but man! Here skinless/boneless chicken is $1.48 at Albertson's. Oranges are in season here in FL, so dirt cheap. I only shop the sales and loss leaders, so matching w/coupons I still can keep it very low. In all honesty, I admire you for finding a way to stay above those prices and feeding your family. I've read some of your posts on the meals you serve, and must say you do very nicely

    Hugs to you Polly!

Prices that are that high usually means that folks will have to start eating like "peasants". That is, soups, stews where theres small amounts of meat and more veggies and water. Slippery pot pies, wheres there little meat, some potatoes and carrots and more "noodles" ( flour, egg, salt, water). Stretching meat to the max and bulk up the meals with beans, and starches and veggies ( that you can grow your own). It can be done and people have to get over their ideas that to eat well, you have to spend a lot on premade crap. Cook from scratch and lose the boxed foods. If you work outside the home, use the crockpot. Then all you need to do is maybe cook the noddles or rice or toss a salad.
Americans are going to have a BIG wake up call. No matter what the gov tells you, there was a smaller harvest this year. Because of the weather, corn was molding and wasn't fit to use as feed or ethanol. Wheat too. No matter where you live you can garden in any container. Shoot, potatoes can be done in garbage bags or cans.
