Turkey on sale at ...
Safeway for $.49 per pound for 16-20 pound frozen birds.
You might want to check Kroeger's too since they are the same company.
I wish I had more space in my freezer but I have 2 still in their from the holidays.The Free Spirit Saver who walks the path with Greebo.

I just bought 2 bone-in Butterball turkey breasts for 99-cents/pound and I roasted them at the same time, cooled, and removed the meat and divided it into portions and vacuum-sealed it.
The next day I boiled the bones for stock and processed it for the freezer. Cooking on-sale turkey and processing the cooked meat/broth takes up a WHOLE lot less space than frozen birds in the freezer.
Now we have cooked turkey for meals, adding to dinner salads, making sandwiches, and all those other things I use it for, from now until they go on sale again in November.
A reminder for doing Turkey Math (also posted in November '09) so you'll know if you are getting a bargain...
The bottom line isn't how much per pound the turkey is, but how much per serving when you figure the waste from bones.
This will also help if you are unsure of the quantity of turkey to purchase according to the number of people you will need to feed.
A good general rule of thumb, allow 1-pound of uncooked turkey per person when purchasing a whole turkey.
Another helpful hint is to keep in mind that a larger bird is a better value. Larger turkeys have more meat in relationship to the amount of bone and cartilage.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whole Turkey - Under 12-pounds - figure 1-pound per serving
Whole Turkey - Over 12-pounds - figure 3/4-pound per serving
Bone-In Turkey Breast - 4-8-pounds - 1/2 lb. per serving
Now THAT's a great influence (LOL). Does your "deli girl" friend happen to sell deli-sliced meats at the end of the day at a reduced rate? Our store sells them for 1/2-price after 7 p.m.
I made "friends" with the guy who manages the meat counter. He's worked at the store since he was in high school as a bag-boy and I always remind him of that... Anyway, since I go to the store same day, same time, he often keeps a look-out for me if he has something "special" to put in the reduced meat area. As my mother-in-law always said, it's not what you know, it's who you know.... That's how I got a $35 spiral-cut ham (the glaze bag had burst, and that was the only problem with the ham - sticky packaging) for $12.50 and I had a $2-off store coupon.
The last bird I cooked gave me approx 3-4 pounds of bone and cartilage after making stock, the rest was used taken off the bone and put into a variety of dishes. I don't know how many servings it was total and will need to keep track on the next bird.
I've also taken the turkey apart before roasting so it takes a lot less time in the oven. I also found it is a lot easier to slice the breasts and I can pull them out and still let the legs and thighs cook to temperature.The Free Spirit Saver who walks the path with Greebo.
