Odd food combo's
I found a similar thread from 2008 labeled "what's your weird food?" but was unable to open it? Sooo, I want to make this one slightly different, but with the same general idea. What is something that you or maybe your whole family eats other's may find odd? This could be just "family tradition" or possibly an ethnic combo that many of us would be unfamiliar with? I grew up having several best friends all of whom were only one generation from living in their familiy's native country (Poland, South Korea, Mexico) so this was a lot of fun for me growing up trying new foods and getting funny looks when I put maple syrup on my sausage or bacon. I used to go to a Korean food store with my friend Seunghye and she would buy junk food I would have never dreamed up, chips (more of a pork rind looking kind of think) that were shrimp flavored, candy sticks covered in plastic wrap that you refridgerate and are the consistancy of jell-o, but not as sugary.
Something else most of my friend's thought was odd was my mom's fried bread dough, which is essentially an elephant ear slathered with butter but minus the sugar and cinnamon. (It goes great with home made chicken noodle soup) Also, pickled balogna with cheese and triscuits (my grandma's favorite snack) and a cream cheese dip we had at Christmas which was a block of the cream cheese, covered with a mixture of cut up immitation crab meat and cocktail sauce, served with crackers. Ok, I will shut up now, because I think I could go on quite a while like this...What are some of your fav's?

My grandma used to make "chocolate" for us for breakfast. It's homemade warm chocolate custard! YUMMY! And she always made biscuits to go with it. It's the one thing she made that I never learned to make and now that she's gone I really regret it.
People think it is weird that my family cans venison.
And we like hamburger gravy. Most people have never heard of it. We like it on toast or biscuits but especially on fried potatoes!S

That's so funny, my parent's used to make that when I was a kid and I absolutely hated it. To this day I do not like potatoes and gravy, though. (Not trying to knock your food or anything!) Now my BF on the other hand....I think he would survive on red meat, potatoes and gravy if I allowed him (needless to say, I've never made him that recipe! LOL).

My favorite breakfast is sausage gravy and fried potatoes with onions ...
I love a banana and peanut butter ...
Fritos and tomato soup ..
My Mom used to make beans (soupy) and add torn up uncooked biscuits(canned) to make beans and dumplings ..I hated them ..and would pick out the nasty dumplings ...
My favorite summer anytime meal is fresh garden tomatoes and gravy (either bacon or sausage ) ..I will eat that 4 or 5 ties a week during tomato season ...
Will have to think on this some more ..LOL

Thanks! I have my grandma's recipe. I just never learned to make it. I keep thinking I will get it out and give it a try. But it's one of those things I'm still touchy about. She didn't make it very often and it was special. My kids used to get up in the morning and say "mommy call grandma and see if she will make us chocolate!" I'd call and she would fix it and we would go in and eat. It's one of those "make me cry" things so I haven't tried it yet. I regret not having her show me how to make it because I know that I will never get it to turn out like hers now.

We do the rice as a breakfast cereal here as well.
Dad and my brother's do applesauce mixed in thier milk. They swear by it. I've never tried it.
We use yogurt as a type of salad dressing as well (especially if we are useing spinach leaves in the salad. Lots of people have given us strange looks over that.

Three things come to mind right away
1.French fries with mayo instead of Ketchup. (especially Wendys fries)
2.Peanut butter sandwich and doritos
3. Pinto beans with corn bread crumbled into it and smothered in ketchup ( I learned this from my Grandpa, He LOVES it to this day)Kim
