I didn't know this subject was going to to get so many replies. Im not againts the program by no means. I just think that some new guidelines need to be taken. Just like the goverment tells states that they can't sell cars without fuel emissions, like Ca. has in place. Dangerous to peoples health.Junk food/fat is hurting people. Its kinda like the goverment giving a helping hand in the the children that are eating stuff like this. The goverment is always complaining that medicaid is out of control. It is!Hospitals are so behind in getting payments. Well lets do something about it, put a cap on what you can buy on the FS card.Only be able to buy stuff like the WIC program does. Very simple. Of course you will have the one that say the goverment don't have the right to that. Yes i believe they do to certain degree. I have the right to complain about the system. It does stink when the ones that really need it,can't get it. But the ones that the abuse it gets all the help they want.Same with other programs. The one that really really need and desire to better themselves by trying to get help for maybe going back to school and needing to cut back on hours at work, or the newly divorced mom who is trying to get on her feet, the ones that are boom out of a job without notice. Those are the ones i have no probelm getting it.
Working in a place that accepts the FS card, i was amazed in the stuff people bought. All the candy like $60 dollars worth on halloween.Everyone loves Junk food. But come onThere is has to be a cut off point. If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal. Not to
people or things.

I live in Canada so we don’t have food stamps, I have however been on welfare and just recently was declared a disabled persons. So does this mean because I am on a government assistance program that they should be able to tell me what food I can and cannot buy? Would you like it if someone was dictating what you could and could not buy? I bought as much fresh food as I could and can. I stretch my money as far as it will go. I don’t abuse the system but I do see why people do. When I was separated from my husband I was given 550 dollars for rent that left me a little over 200 dollars a month to buy food, pay bills, cloths for my daughter and I. Yes I shop second hand and sales. And being on disability I don’t get that much money. Thank god my medications are covered as they run over 300 a month now. I don’t think anyone has any right to judge until you have walked in those shoes. Yes the systems are not perfect and people do abuse them. I know a women myself who is on disability and (they do go by spouses income to determine how much you should get) whose common law husband makes up to 5000 a month and she has not told them about him and gets the full amount. As someone who has struggled it does tick me off that people abuse the system, but it also ticks me off that people are so judgmental of others. Don’t ever think you know the full story about someone because most of the time you have no real idea.

Fresh food also costs ALOT more than "junk food" cost.
2ndGenGranola, I hope to God you NEVER get on Food Stamps, cause then you would know how hard it is and what a witch you are being about the whole thing. Just remember what goes around comes around. I pay my taxes and follow the law, just because others don't is NOT MY problem. Don't lump everyone that is on Food Stamps in the same group.

I am a recipient of Food Stamps. There are restrictions. Not many. You can use coupons with the EBT card, and I do. I think we are an average family. I don't buy a ton of junk food or anything like that. But I believe I do buy the same amount as any other family that pays cash or food stamps for their food. I see nothing wrong with buying a container of ice cream so that my kids can have dessert after they eat their healthy dinners. I make as many healthy choices I can. But when we do home made subs or the like, what's wrong with having some chips on the side? Or what about when it's a holiday or birthday party buying some chips and soda's for the kids? Yes I agree the food stamps are given to provide families with healthy food to feed themselves. And I do that...but If I didn't receive the food stamps my children wouldn't have the luxury of having ice cream or ice pops on a hot summer day. Or cookies for dessert on some nights after dinner! I don't feel that I abuse the system....but treating people like criminals because they buy cookies or ice cream for their families isn't right! I shop the sales, I use coupons, but I do like to get treats for my kids now and again. And FYI, my kids aren't overweight and neither am I. We eat healthfully for the most part with some treats thrown in, like any other typical American family. I work hard and am treated awful every time I have to go to the DSS office to reapply or re certify. Preparing homemade breads, cookies, cakes etc...isn't always possible because I really don't have the time, being a single, working, mother with two kids. I agree some people do abuse the system, but if you make everything super strict, then it would be punishing the people that do use them wisely.
