It is just the puppy smell. Smells like she ate a dead skunk? Yup, that's puppy smell. You get used to it and it does go away

The dog-mom bathes the puppies so why couldn't you? I would not immerse such a young puppy in water, but maybe use a damp wash cloth and dry her immediately. Do you have a heating pad you could wrap up in a towel to keep her warm? We always put a ticking clock w/the heating pad and it soothed the puppy to sleep.

5 weeks is really too young to be apart from the mom. Yes, you can give her a sponge bath. The question is, what is the stink? Does it smell like old socks or dried blood?
My concern is, puppies shouldn't smell bad at 5 weeks. Mom does a good job of grooming after their birth. I would call the vet, let them know your puppy stinks and that mom stopped caring for her and that she is 5 weeks old. They'll want to test for Parvo and please let them do that. Parvo can be so devastating if not caught early. Parvo also makes a puppy stink, really bad. She'll also probably be given a dose of intestinal parasite wormer. If everything is in the clear, you'll probably get some formula and a strict feeding schedule to help Miss Teenie grow strong.
She'll need vaccines eventually, and anything given at this young age is considered temporary since her immune system is not fully developed and at optimal operation. She'll start getting her immunizations at 8 weeks and boosters following around 3-4 weeks after the initial.
Good luck with Miss Teenie, and congratulations!

Just including a link to the AAHA guidelines for vaccinations, I hope this helps. Vaccines

Congratulations on your new addition! I would also agree that a visit to the vet would be a good idea.

    Congratulations!!

Dogs are awesome. I was just telling some friends the other day that there isn't anything that a dog hug can't make better except maybe a sandwich.

3 weeks is really young, If it was me, I would probably take it to the vet for assistance.

congrats on the new member of the household!!!

    What kind of puppy?

MTS2004 summed it up pretty good.

Also, since the mother quit caring for them ---she also cleans all the genital area - so if it is a female, check to make sure she doesn't have some sort of infection on her female anatomy. That can have an odor. It will be really red on the inside.

I would definitely get her to a vet---being so young and away from the mother is NOT a good thing. The mother not only cleans them but teaches them sooooo much --even about their own grooming.

    Good luck

PICTURES PLEASE!!!!!!.........I love puppies.......this made me go awwwwww!!! Would love to have another ---if they could stay a puppy!! NOTHING CUTER!

Now that's one cute pup! Congratulations on your new puppy. I can't help with bathing but I definately would make an appointment for this little one at the vet. This puppy needs a good once over and shots right away. Exposure to the outside world now makes this pup very vulnerable. 3 weeks is way too young to be weaned, puppy milk could not hurt. Sold in cans at the pet food store.

    Enjoy your new baby!!!!
