We may be moving again...... YES, AGAIN!
It's a really, really REALLY long story, but the gist of it goes like this: hubby is bored at work, (doing a fabulous job, but cannot stand it), the comute is really affecting him, the school situation is really really bad (in fact, our spec ed ds just started homeschooling today, the school is so bad), I am done better than expected at being in CA, but it is still really tough, and our lovely home is extremely isolating.....I have struggled with not slipping into depression for the last several months (unfortunatley, I have medicated with retail therapy), and on, and on, and on, and on.........
Well - hubby's industry is unique, in that it is unaffected by the economy, and he has found out that there are companies that have heard that he may be interested in coming to work for them. We have about 3 companies wineing and dineing him right now. Let's get real, we miss the midwest, REALLY REALLY BAD! He has a company wanting him to come back for an interview and talk. They want to know if our family is interested in moving back to the midwest....heck yea! But, we are unfamiliar with Missouri, sooooo.........
I could use some help from those of you who know this area: they would like us to live in Columbia, MO. The job is state wide, but this is their requested location for a residence. We would not even be having this conversation if we could live on the KS side of KC (and we may end up there.....)
What can anyone tell me about it? schools? I am especially interested in special ed. I already called and talked with the spec ed director of the district, and I liked what I heard - but anyone call "sell" their district, KWIM? I always had this "backwoods" impression of Missouri - unfair, I know, but we really REALLY want to make sure this is THE LAST move for our family (we have moved about every 20 months or so it seems for the last 10 years.....)
Well, I need to go "do some more school" with ds......... thanks for listening.

I don't know if this helps, but we used to live in Overland Park KS. The schools are in the top of the country for being great. They were really great, and very large school district. There are some very nice parts of MO, Lee's Summit is nice, I can't help you with the schools. I wish you the best of luck. P.S A real estate agent can give you school info if you can not find anything on line.

Don't know anything either but wanted to say congratulations on moving. You sound so excited! You can go to a realtors website like Remax and pick an area. Then it will give you the info on the schools, stores, crime rate for different crimes, average age etc. You could pick out several areas and compare.
Anyway hope all turns out as you wish.Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

Columbia is a beautiful little city. And it's the home of the MIZZOU tigers (great university and beautiful campus)! I have alot of friends that have gone to college there, and they only have good things to say about the town. It's about 4 hours from me, so I don't know about the school district, but I love the midwest..I like having 4 distinct seasons. Good luck, prayers for you!

What DJ said. Columbia is a college town but very nice. It's not too big but not too small and has everything you would need. I'm about 3 hours from there.
If you like Kansas, Toto, MO is pretty nice too.
And cheaper living in several areas.
As far as the schools goes, don't know about Columbia but I can only imagine them being good. I've had no problem with the schools in this area. Well as long as you are out of some parts of KCMO/KC kansas area.(which you would be) I know you like the midwest and I think if you happen to land here, you might really enjoy it.
You can have me over for dinner.
Wasn't it Topeka, KS you used to live at?
