Bake sales BANNED!
What do you think? They banned bake sales
as a way to raise money because of the Wellness policy.
I understand the Wellness policy is good, but this seems a tad overboard. It's not going to stop the people who bought stuff from buying it somewhere else... like the bakery.

I think its a great idea - overall.
However exceptions or more specific rules should be put in place. The whole point is to raise money for the school so the board doesn't have to put out that $.
They should limit it to one bake sale/month OR opt to hold after school bake sales that start just as that bell rings for the kids to be dismissed. Does this affect 'candy bar fund raising' too?
When I read your thread - initially I thought it was b/c of all the food allergies coming about. Wow was I wrong.2012: The Year Of The Purge!

As tight as school budgets are and the economic climate the way it is, how are the kids suppose to raise money for things?
I never thought about candy sales.
What about Girl Scout cookies, are they next?
Car washes?- They'll soon restrict water usage.Russ

My kids went to elementary school in NYC and we raised a TON of money with bake sales. That was our only means of raising money. The money paid for field trips, stuff for the classroom, holiday parties, whatever the teacher decided. We could only have one every so often (I don't remember ~ maybe once a grading period?) and only on a Friday at lunch. It's not like they were having them every day, all day.
I think they get carried away with this stuff. Perhaps if the school board PAID for a gym teacher at each school, we wouldn't have these problems. I've always thought it was important to have gym and still do. My kids school didn't have a gym teacher so a couple of us Moms went in 2 or 3 times a week and held a gym class with their teacher for the kids...what a concept! BUT the school they went to was the ONLY school in NYC that still had recess
so at least they were outside playing a couple of times a day!
I am so thankful that my kids are out of school ~ I would go berserk dealing with this stuff.Nancy

I'm all for it.
No, we can't stop people from buying it somewhere else, but we can stop perpetuating and encouraging unhealthy habits.
Have a Read-a-Thon, a Hop-a-Thon, a Basketball-a-Thon, a Marathon to raise money. Have the kids sell their time mowing the lawn, doing housework, doing yardwork, etc. (Granted, difficult to do yardwork in NYC, but you get the drift.)
As the person in charge of raising $20,000 each year for financial aid for our 8th grade DC trip, believe me when I tell you that there are tons of creative ways to raise money that don't involve selling unhealthy food. We have a Student-Faculty Volleyball game, a Staff Talent Show, a Teacher Talent Show, etc. Would it be easier to ask Mom's to bake and sell that? Sure. These other ways are MUCH more rewarding, and do raise more money than a bake sale.My Blog: http://amysreallife.wordpress.com

I think it's absolutely ridiculous. Wow...what's next? I can understand limiting those types of things, but it's not like they're having a bake sale every other day.
How much we enjoy what we have is more important than how much we have. Life is full of people who have more than they know what to do with, but cannot be content. It is the capacity to enjoy life that brings contentment.---Unknown

I dont trust that bake sale are safe. Their are crazy ppl everywhere now days and some want to hurt us in sick ways. Its just not the 50's anymore. Some ppl do bad things. My son got a cookie in a baggie for V-day at school I made him throw it out. You just never know these days.

And somebody could get hurt, sue the county, or the parents and then all those things would be stopped.
I do however like the idea of Physical education as a class. Bake sales have been part of fund raising for years. Why stop it now?
Make them , healthy snacks if need be, but I think some people feel the need to make rules just for the sake of making them or to push their own agenda.Russ

Just because bake sales are allowed, doesn't mean they have to be chosen as the means of fund raising if those involved prefer to do something else.
I don't have a strong feeling for or against bake sales, but I do feel very strongly that there are way too many people telling us what we can and cannot do these days.Donna

I've participated in a lot of bake sales even though I don't (on most days) eat the goodies. I do buy them for my family, friends and classes. Like Amy's idea of being creative - it takes a dedicated creative person to make it work!!

It says Effectively banned.
My state (not NY) has had a Wellness policy for several years now and it effectively banned bake sales and candy sales etc.
They still have them they just can't have/sell them them during school hours like the article here suggested.
The Wellness Policy is a good thing for the health of the school children.

You are correct. So they made it very difficult.
Parent groups and Parent-Teacher Associations are conspicuously given an exception: once a month they are allowed to sell as many dark fudge brownies and lemon bars as they please, so long as lunch has ended. And after 6 p.m. on weekdays, anything goes. But at that hour, most students are long gone, and as far as the Education Department is concerned, stuffing oneself with coconut macaroons and peanut butter cookies at that hour is one’s prerogative.

"wellness" = we are concerned we will get sued due to kids food allergies.
They did this in my town - a city wide ban, not just schools, because of Board of Health concerns about the quality of the kitchens the food was baked in. It was quickly recinded after the uproar.
