Default So Used to Thrift Store Prices

Well I was watching the evening news. There was a segment on a new consignment shop for children and maternity clothes. Apparently they specialize in high end clothing. Some of the examples they gave was a small childs coat that would originally sell for around $100 but at the store was $40. They gave a couple of examples like this.

So I am sitting there thinking, $40 dollars!!!!! The most I spent on a coat was around $24 and it still looked brand new. Then I started thinking couldn't someone buy a child's coat for $40 at a store? Ok, so it may not be designer but why would you buy a child a $100 coat to begin with?

So obviously I am really used to thrift store prices. There are even times when I am in a regular store and I see the price and think I can get this at the thrift store for $3.00! Am definately to used to thrift store prices. lol

I had the same reaction last fall. DD didn't go away for college but does Community instead so i wanted to treat her. We went to Platos closet resale. they had ED Hardy t-shirts for $40. I guess they sell for $100. Not to me... But still. We never went again.

I got a gift card once for a sporting goods store, so I went and hunted through their bargain section. I couldn't find a thing I liked or that would fit. I was complaining to my husband, and he said, "Why don't you just buy something off the regular merchandise rack?" I realized then that it hadn't occured to me that I could buy something at full price with my gift card -- I was so used to hunting through the bargain sections at stores that I hadn't bothered to try the regular merchandise!

I refuse to pay high prices for things that only get a year or so of use. Especially kids clothes. My sister always asks what the kids need so I tell her what clothing and the size. Also my ex's mother likes to shop so I tell her what the kids need for clothes and shoes. She has the money and it gives her an excuse to go shopping.
I would rather have her buy them clothes than toys. She used to buy them toys constantly. Now she gets them clothes and shoes.

Unfortunately it is hard to find kids clothing in decent shape at low prices where I live. Sometimes Target will have sales, but it is hard to find the right sizes and things that match.

My boyfriend complains sometimes cause when we go to stores to look at clothes my first stop is the clearance section. He always says "you know we can afford to buy regular stuff" and I always tell him it's silly to not look at the clearance when it used to be on the regular shelf like a week ago for full price. I found a very cute dress shirt (i had been looking for a new dress shirt for interviews) one day for 8 dollars, regular price was 45 and he told me "Oh, I like it. For that price, get a few more!" lol.

Yeah, and what's really difficult is when you get used to thrift store prices and they go up at your favorite one! I hate it when that happens!

I also get sticker shock from some consignment stores (usually the ones in the city). $30 for used jeans is just too much... I don't care what brand they are & how much they retail for. I usually stick to those that keep their prices low to begin with & then run sales. I do find that the value of many items are affected by how little they would cost me at a thrift store. It really keeps my spending under control!

Yea, really! I also can't understand why people buy plain tshirts without any kind of writing or anything for 30-60 bucks at places like Hollister. I can go to walmart/target or a similar store and buy 5-7 dollar plain tshirts.

My daughters favorite place is Victoria Secret and wet seal. No i must say. Victoria secret is very pricey but the bra's seem to last forever and never lose there shape. She went to wet seal last week and bought a huge bag of stuff dirt cheap. Underwear that were reg.$8.00 a pair she got for 50 cents. She bought shirts $60 bucks for around $5-8. If i can find stuff that cheap i will buy new.
My 14 year old bought 4 pairs of jeans at GW a few days ago. all hollister for $2.50 a pair.New those jeans are like $60 bucks. Not in our world!!

I love thrift stores... But the prices are rising very slowly... they are just sneeking up there... well I got the shock of my life a few days ago when i went into GW and say this 1930s antiuqe china cupboard and the sticker said.....$799.00 I almost fell over that is insane.... I just happen to be married to a antique dealer and have a antique shop.... this is not worth $75.00 what a insane price...

What I was surprised to discover is the major lack of maternity clothes they have. They have nothing but jeans! I needed work pants like no one's business. My mom ended up taking me shopping for two pairs of mat pants -- $75 total!!! For a couple pairs of brown khakis with a stretchy belly! I have been taking really good care of my mat pants because I only have 4 and dammit, that's all I'm willing to own, at that price!

Hey! I don't know if I can do this here, but if it's not allowed someone can remove it. I just put a bunch of maternity clothes in my ebay store if you want to check them out. Go to Penelope's Place to see them. Just trying to help...

I guess I have gotten use to thrift store prices.

Today we headed to the big city and while there went to a children's consignment chop (resale) I found the exact same Gap shirt that I had recently bought Little Miss but in a size bigger they wanted $8. I had paid $1 for hers on sale day at our local thrift store. Needless to say that shirt and the rest of their clothes stayed there.

I was also shocked at the price of Pj's at Target. We ended up getting a three pieced cottton set (shortsleeve top, long pants and shorts) on clearance for $10.98. It was so hard to do.

So yes. I have gotton use to thrift store prices.
