When Did The Term "Favorite"...
...come to mean "I love this for all of five minutes?" I'm listening to an interview with a celebrity (wow, I guess I'm on a real celebrity kick right now -- weird!) and the interviewer has said, about six times, "This is my favorite (fill in the blank) right now!"
I was always under the impression that "favorite" actually meant "most loved of all, ever."

I hear what you are saying, and my guess is that celebrity favorites change based on who is currently sponsoring them...
...HOWEVER...
According to your definition, you could never really pick a favorite anything until the last minute of your life. Things are changing so quickly in todays life...there is always something new.
My favorite movie maybe be X right now, but next month, when a new one comes out that I like better, then my favorite may change. We've been trying different foods at our house that we haven't eaten before. Favorites are changing every day as my cooking improves.
I think "favorite" is a term that can be in flux, based on the changing times. My Blog: http://amysreallife.wordpress.com

I've always been really reluctant to call things my favorite or even tell people my favorites because it always seems to fickle to me when people flip-flop on favorites.

Or maybe they are like I am in interviews. I have a "favorite" word or phrase that I overuse during the entire interview. Usually I revert to valley girl talk when I'm nervous, so I end up saying words like totally, like, wow, amazing, cool, dude, right, absolutely, ya know, omg, etc. etc. over and over and over. Afterward when I listen to it, I'm mortified. And this gets worse depending on who I'm talking to and how nervous I am. LOL

That reminds me of when Rachael Ray was still just local talent. She said the Today show called her out of the blue, needing a last minute replacement for a guest. She did a spot with Al Roker, and said the word "groovy" over and over again. Al even commented on how much she must like that word.
How much we enjoy what we have is more important than how much we have. Life is full of people who have more than they know what to do with, but cannot be content. It is the capacity to enjoy life that brings contentment.---Unknown

Celebrities all seem pretty "flaky" to me... I'm not surprised at the misuse of the word.

Was "favorite" the replacement word for "actually", which was another over-used word, along with "like". We all get caught up in words/phrases from time-to-time, and they become bad habits.
Maybe the book The Dimwit's Dictionary: 5,000 Overused Words and Phrases and Alternatives to Them is in order.
