Both high schools I went to had three lunch periods for the kids. The earliest was 10:30am-11:15am, then 11:20am-12:00pm, then 12:05pm to 12:45pm. It was so weird. This was with a 8:10am to 2:45pm school day too. That was 10-15 years ago too and I know that they've changed the length of each class since then.

Wow such varying school times and lunch times!
When I went to HS it was only three choices and the total range for lunch was from 11.30am-1pm. If you were in the caf before/after lunch it was for quiet study only (if you had a spare) and you had to sit in a special section. The caf was monitored at all times. Our start time was 8.45am and ended at 3pm.2012: The Year Of The Purge!

DD's school: 8:15 to 3:15 school day. They have three lunch waves during fourth period. Wave #1 eats from 11:00 - 11:30, wave #2 eats from 11:30 - 12:00 and wave #3 eats from 12:00 - 12:30.
DS's school for next year: 7:45-2:45 school day. All students in all grades 9-12 eat from 12:00-12:30. (As I said in my previous post, his current school dismisses for the day @ 12:30 so he eats lunch at home this year.)DD (19)

Todays lunch
Hot dog with a club roll
baked beans
canned peaches
milk
We have no idea why club rolls come with the hot dogs instead of hot dog rolls.

Our school system also limits the amount of sodium in a meal. There are NEVER salt and pepper shakers, disposable packs, etc. available to the students. There are times they have served french fries or tator tots and didn't serve ketchup because they were already at the sodium limit with the meal. Overall I'm happy with their school lunches. They serve a main dish that kids like(hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, etc.) but have fresh fruit, veggies, a salad bar and whole wheat rolls.

I do not have children in school, but called my grandkids to find out what was on the menu. There is one lunch choice, or salad bar for middle and high school.GD said they had chicken sandwich, sweet potato fries, green beans, oatmeal cookie, milk. She told me that her mom only lets her eat twice a week at school. She said her mom dropped off" a bunch of crap" for her lunch- tuna sandwich, carrot and celery sticks, grapes, and a cookie.

I watched the re-run of the Jamie Oliver show last night. It was very interesting. Saw a lot of our school lunch program in the show. I'm sure most of the students here would have the same reaction to "good for you" foods.
We did have apples with our lunches yesterday. However many K and 1st grade students are short in the front tooth dept. Pre-sliced would have been better.

Our school lunch program offers healthy meals every day. Each meal comes with a fruit and a vegetable, a side salad, and skim milk or water. No fries to be seen in our school cafeteria. Also, no soda machines anywhere. They offer healthy entrees, and although they also offer pizza every day, it is whole wheat crust, low-fat mozzarella, and their own sauce that is low-sodium and organic.
The food is actually quite delicious and very healthy. They have the nutrition information available so parents can always check it out.My Blog: http://amysreallife.wordpress.com

My girls pack a lunch every day. We always have. Our school didn't have a lunch "program" up until about 2 years ago. Prior to that they had a loaf of bread and peanut butter & jelly for kids who forgot their lunch. (or something else if the kid was allergic.)
We now have a "modified" lunch program, but again it's rare that kids take it. It's for low income families & kids that forget.

I worry for next year. My oldest will be going to Jr. High. they have a hot lunch program. I just took a look at the menu. Uggh! She will still be packing! These kids must be so sluggish after eating salisbury steak and mashed potatoes for lunch.
