What are your children eating at school for lunch?
I was watching The preview on TV of Oliver's food nation last night and he visited a school and their lunch program.
It made me wonder what other children are eating for lunch at school? May I peek at what is on the menu at your local schools?
Here is what is on the school menu at my children's school
Today:
Cheeseburger , sweet potato fries, tossed salad, Oranges, and Graham cracker bits ( for dessert I guess) Dessert is served no more than a few days a week and milk
Tomorrow:
Bosco sticks (bread wrapped cheese sticks) with marinara dipping sauce, peas, baby carrots, Strawberry/banana cup and milk
I just curious to see what is on others plate"Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

My high school a-la carte line was the worst. There were 4 lines; 3 were a la carte and 1 was for regular hot lunch. Two of the a la carte lines were the same, and always PACKED. Pizza, cheeseburgers, bosco sticks, cheese sauce packets, pretzels, nacho chips, breaded chicken sandwiches, fries. This was served every day. In the 3rd a la carte line there was a small grocery store style cooler with "salads" (processed lunch meat and shredded cheese atop a bed of shredded iceburg lettuce), and ice cream. There was a Campbell's soup cart with chicken noodle and 2 cream of something or another (brocoli, cheese, potato.) At the end of the line was a rolling cart with every candy bar you could think of and Little Debbie snacks. On the other side of the wall was a pop (soda) machine and a Nesquick "milk" (don't get me started.....) machine. I've been out of HS for 4 years now, but my little sister is on her last year and nothing has changed save the pop and Nesquik machines being removed. Oh and I think she said they changed the french fries....how so, I have no idea. I thought that this was supposed to change? I heard all sorts of talk about getting rid of junk food served at schools, but in the school system I went to, little has been done about it. Perhaps the hot lunches have been overhauled but the 3 a la carte lines at my old school still exist and the number of kids going through those lines was always WAAAAAY more than those going through the hot lunch line when I was there. Which reminds me... The menus you all get have only the hot lunch listed. If you have kids in middle or high school, chances are they have a la carte choices, and I'm betting they are not much different than what I listed above. If they are, be thankful for it.

We don't have a lunch program here. So I made dd6 lunch, and the other 3 make their own.
DD6 today has a whole wheat sandwich, baby carrots, mandarin, and 2 cookies. A bottle of water(her own re-usable bottle).
That is her typical lunch, it's what i know she'll eat.
Other days, we experiment, changing out 1 item for something new, so i know she'll still eat.
Older kids, take leftovers in a thermos, or make soup. Sandwiches fruit, granola bar, yogurt, cookies, crackers, raw veggies(not all at the same time, but a combination of some).

In my kiddos school, if you bring a lunch from home they make you sit at a special table because a lunch maybe contaminated due to allergies. Ridiculous. My kids buy because of it.

I don't think much of the choices. Too much deep fried for my taste. My kids who go to PS take their lunch. I'm not sure what my high schoolers took, probably sandwiches and salad. The 5th and 8th grader took
leftover soup
pbj sandwiches on ww
applesauce
homemade cookie
waterMom to Emma, Spencer, Connor, Lily,Fletcher, Amelia and Adeline.
Mortgage $78,500/$15,200

Yes they choose one main dish and then any of the sides are available. If I remember correctly the dinner roll is not considered a side, it is included if you want it. I am at a middle school where the students choose each item themselves, it is in a serving size container already, not scooped up by a server like back in my day. Also, the nutrition information is on a little card in a stand in front of each item. (sides included) I like that because when I eat school lunch I can make a choice and have the facts right in front of me.

Our schools here tried that, but their lawyers told them they couldn't enforce it.

My kids ate free lunch through school too and they are skinny as rails. I wouldn't blame the schools alone.
No one sits and makes them finish their lunch if they are full and I don't know about other schools but at ours everything is pre-measured into serving sizes. Unlike when I was in school and it was "slopped on the tray". There again, I did not gain weight through school and loved hot lunch.
Maybe some schools aren't as diligent as ours though, about nutrition, depending on the area. We have restrictions on what can be served at school activities, what foods can be given as rewards, it all has to meet certain nutrition guidelines that were passed down through nutrition services in our district.Last edited by krbshappy71; 03-22-2010 at 01:15 PM. Reason: sounded like a rant. probably still does.
