Sooo on Sunday night we rushed our daughter to the hospital because she wouldn't stop screaming about her mouth hurting. We couldn't make her feel better no matter what we did. So the ER dr looks in her mouth says she can't see anything but her throat looks red. So gave us antibiotics. We go to get them filled; the Pharmaists tells us the dose is for someone who is 100lbs not 50. So I had to call my family dr, who called the pharmacist who then calls me. We get that all sorted out. But she is still complaining and crying about her mouth so I call our dentist, he won't see us because he won't take disability payments. I have been seeing this guy since I was 9. So I find another dentist, they see us. We get there my daughter has such a bad gag reflex they can't x-ray. So they look she has a SEVERE infection in her gums, and an abscess tooth. So they send us to a peds dentist we get there they look and tell me it has to come out TODAY. That she wouldn't have even made it the weekend without it becoming so bad we would be back in ER. (they checked her teeth two months ago at school and gave her the all clear)
So they give her laughing gas, something else and freezing. The infection is so bad they can't freeze well enough so she pretty much screamed when it came out. I felt so bad for her.
Thank god the dentist and peds dentist fit us in, gave her great care, but what kind of freakn ER dr. Can't see a gum and mouth infection, and then gives the wrong dose for meds. What a friggin week and it’s not even over yet.

After 5 kids, several dentists plus mine, I haven't seen a dentist nor ped dentist agree to take a tooth out WITH an abcess. Antibiotics first to get the infection down THEN take the tooth. If not the abcess can move to the heart and/or thru the body. Just saying.

On the other hand emergency rooms (most) suck anyway. So yes, I can believe it and I hope the rest of the week gets a whole lot better. Luckily the pharmacist caught the weight error or it could have been a lot worse. Hugs to your daughter/

    Dang...your poor little girl.Hugs.
We've had experiences w/abcesses too & the dentist will perscribe antibitics for about 3 days (&pain pills if needed) - THEN he pulls the tooth. B/c if you pull the tooth without getting the infection under control, the novacain will not work...the poison will cancel out the novacain's purpose.
I hope your little one is feeling better. ER rooms suck.

Sorry your dd had to go through this. Glad it is done and over with. I am not in any way sticking up for the health care system, but my dh just told me that my neighbors; one a nurse in er and another works in the operating room with something to do with breathing. They are working 12 hour shifts 3 days a week right now. I'm surprised that is allowed. I sure don't think I could work 12 hours and still be as efficient as when I first came into work. How do you people in the medicsl field feel about this especially the people who do this??

Thankfully the tooth is gone now - I also give kudos to the pharmacist for reading the prescription and finding the error.
I hope your daughter is feeling better today.

Well, I can only tell you about my experience...I was an OR nurse and had to work 12 hours or more with call, etc. and I was very upset because I wouldn't even get a 15 minute break sometimes and that didn't matter if it was through the night or not. I made a stink about it and ended up contacting the head honchos in the state's employment dept (don't remember the name) and THEY told me that employees were perfectly within their rights to not make sure that you had a break of any kind. If you had to work 12 hours straight without going to pee then it was tough! I told them that that was crazy! I know that when I had to work those long hours it was very hard.

I questioned the safety of it as a healthcare person, but they weren't concerned at all about it. Just wanted to add that...
