Our schools host Arts & Craft shows. They charge a very small amount to get in the door, your name is automatically entered in the raffle upon doing so, then booths all around the gym or cafeteria from vendors and homemakers selling their wares. It is A LOT of fun to go to them! I often buy Christmas presents from them as they have unique things.
Another thing our schools do, same arena, but a huge combined garage sale. Families donate their goods to be sold at it, kids sort and price everything, flyers go out and announcements in the district email system, its usually a big hit. The items aren't always as nice as the Arts & Crafts, as they aren't new, but it still brings in money.LDR

Challenges for 2012:
2012 Grocery Budget Reduction Challenge- $100 a month. (down from $150) Hm, might be too low.
Electric Usage Challenge (doing well, under $70 most months)
Yah, I suck at this money stuff, I know. That's why I'm here.

A few years ago one of my organizations did a non-ball - a fund raiser where we contributed money rather than incur the expense of: paying for tickets; buying a new dress or shoes or shirt; hiring a babysitter; paying gas for the car; paying for parking; paying for drinks at the cash bar. Believe me, we were glad to contribute a heftier amount than we might have otherwise, when we realized just now much money we were saving by not having to go somewhere and sit around for an evening!

As the mom of an orchestra member and another child starting next year, my heart hurts when I hear of music programs being cut. I cannot imagine what would happen here if they did that.
Some of the things our school district has done (We run all our music between 4 schools and meet at the Jr. high) is a magazine subscription drive. I've heard that brings in some pretty good cash. They've also sold product - last time it was frozen pizza's & candy/nuts in gift canisters. Home Run Inn pizza runs a good fundraiser program.
We have a parents group that oversee's all the fundraising. They host special outings for the kids as well.

Sports is always the sacred cow! And yes, they will cut foreign languages before they cut sports. In other countries, people can speak other languages in addition to their native language. Here in the U.S. we can barely speak English! Pathetic sense of priorities.
Senator Herb Kohl of WI may be someone worth contacting. He is known to help many, many causes in the state, using his personal wealth.
