I took the part about trying it to mean Try that brand of waffles not try to see if the coupon works with the sale item.

That's what I thought, too, but looking at it again it does sound more like she's saying the coupon might not work. "It's worth a shot" doesn't sound like something you'd say about trying frozen waffles.

Hmmmm, valid argument. I'm not sure how she meant that. The whole thing seemed like it was written in a hurry, not much detail.
