A Bear!
So, this morning, the kids were playing in the basement, and suddenly dd looks out the sliding glass door and sees a huge black bear eating a tree from our side yard! My dh called the cops and they came and blew the air horns at him and he ran off into the woods behind the house.
This bear has been sighted a few times over the past week, throughout our neighborhood, but this is the first time he was near our house, and man, was he near! Dd said, if she had opened the door, she could have touched him.
I know that it may be commonplace for some of you, based on where you live, but for my family, here in the New Jersey suburbs, this was quite a different experience!
Wonder who will show up tomorrow! My Blog: http://amysreallife.wordpress.com

WOOWEEEEE. I would have freaked. I had thousands of yellow jackets in the ground,a swarm of bees, voles in the garage,a deer gallop thru the front yard, skunks, possums snarling at the beagle, raccoons and chipmunks in the attic but I will take it all over a bear. We currently have coyotes wandering here and there. We are residential. You just never know what's going on outside.

My parents had one at their bird feeder beside the back deck last year. They are suburban, but back onto woods so have had bears on occasion in the past. Scary when they are right outside the door though.

That scares the crap outta me! LOL. I'm in New Jersey too, Morris county to be exact. I hope the bear isn't near here.

Ooooooh, that`s not a good sign. When the wildlife starts coming into closer contact with people, that is NEVER a good thing. If he shows up again, I think I`d be calling your local wildlife center or people in charge of this sort of thing. This bear is either getting too bold or he`s losing his natural habitat. Something`s spoiling him and it`s only going to be dangerous for both your community and for him.

You keep the bear .......wow.........
Currently I am contending with snakes in the wood pile. We get quite a few critters here because we live in the country and have a woods behind us, and a woods across the road. We see lots of turkeys, coyotes, fox, deer, wild feral pigs, etc. All kinds of wild birds. It's never dull around here

Yikes! I flipped when we had a coyote on my deck...putting his face right through our screen slider. A bear would surely put me over the top LOL

OMG! That would scare me..........you're going to have to start checking the yard before letting the kids out, I guess!
We have them up at our cabin, but they never come too closse to the house. Coyotes too, but ditto--they never come near.
If I had kids, and that happened, I'd be petrified!______

It happens when they can't feed themselves in their own habitat. They're just looking for food!

That is a typical summer day in our home... LOL. We have so many black bears here.
Some years are worse than others.
When my eldest daughter was having her 8th BD party in the backyard we had a bear walk into the party ( he ran off pronto when all 10 little girls started shrieking....).
And last year we were seeing bears daily, and my 12 yr. old was complaining everyone was seeing bears except her and it wasn't fair...
So a few days later she walked around the trailer and came face to face with.... you guessed it a bear! It apparently cocked its head as if to say what are you doing here??? And then her shriek sent him running.
In our area no one leaves garbage etc out... and so even though bears are commonplace (it is very forested and rural) they do not associate people with free handouts and so there has not been any bad human/bear outcomes.
Now cougars, scare the bejeebers out of me..
