    Default Wal-Mart ATM Error.

Ok, i was at a Wal-Mart and i went to use there ATM to take out $200. But there was a problem and the machine gave me $115 all in $5! It stopped and the employee behind the counter came over to help she opened it up and looked inside the $5 cassette and said there was no more in there and then proceeded to take out the cassette for the $20's and she said that was full (Weird that the ATM choose to give me $200 in all $5's). She went into the office or whatever you wanna call it and about 2 to 3 minutes later she came back and put the cassette back in and the machine still would not give me the difference. After trying that for like 10 minutes another employee behind the counter was like; " you have the keys just open it up again and give him the difference". So she did and i thanked her for the help, i went on my merry way. The $200 was for rent so i gave that the to my friend for my part of the rent money. The next day i checked my account as i do every morning, to see that they reversed the transaction. So i go to check my account today only to see that the reversal has been posted to my account. I have notified the bank as of yesterday but they still posted it to my account.

Edit: i should also point out that the ATM never completed the transaction. After she gave me the difference she turned it off. I never got a reciept, she ended up putting an out of order sign on the ATM.

I'm not sure what your question is... but morals aside, the legal thing is to contact your bank and let them know what happened.

If your local ATM gave you extra money, you know the bank would eventually catch the mistake... and so will the Walmart machine.

I thought the OP already informed the bank. Just don't assume that you actually have the extra $200 for at least 90 days if not a whole year. As long as the OP has informed a representative of the bank of the error, I don't think he needs to hound the bank to take their money back.

Was this by phone your contact? That paranoid neuron in the back of my brain wonders if you might later get in trouble by not being able to prove that you let them know of the error.

The way it looks to me is that the ATM basically didn't close the transaction so the bank said it didn't happen. The ATM company is out $200. Ethically, the OP owes the ATM company $200.

When the ATM is balanced there will be a 200$ shortage, OP's bank, with the information he provided, should be able to contact the provider of said ATM and do what is called a 'site adjustment' to correct the offage between bank account and atm.

IF that doesn't work, go back tothe ATM. Every ATM I have ever seen has a contact number of the bank or company that services it. Call them and explain what happened.

I never knew Walmart had their own ATM's - I thought they were all independent cash machines that just robbed you blind. Wow you learn something new every day. Personally if I'm going to be robbed blind with fees - I'd be willing to guy buy a choc bar for a buck and do cash back at the cashier. At least I get something for my 'fees' ... kinda, sorta.

So what's the question? Did the end up over or under charging you?
