even in the woods
i live here in WV in a development on the side of the mountain on large lots in fact most of the time when the trees are in full green you can't see your neighbors. there was a home invasion by 5 punks just down the road .looking for drugs.there was a young mother and a 2 year old in the house both were bound while they stole the home safe and weapons but thankfully nether was hurt and after they left she called 911 and the state police caught them within 15 miles away its a crying shame -i left the city to get away from that stuff.but after i was robbed 1i 03 i had bars on all the windows and doors so i at least feel somewhat safe will just have to check and make sure all is locked when we go to bed or to town im somewhat scared and will keep a pistol near the bed at night- sorry just clearing my mind hope everyone in the forum are safe and well

It happens everywhere.
We have a cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, WAY back in the woods, and we've been broken into twice.
One time, they left the fornt and back doors wide open (we are gone for months) and there were leaves and all kinds of junk blown in or carried in by animals. Yuck.
They have always been looking for guns and drugs and booze. You can tell by the way they toss the house. And they break into DH's barn looking for tools and equipment. Fun.
We've never been there, thank God.
Glad your neighbor is OK.______

How sad that this is happening in your area too. So often it comes down to drugs. Glad that your neighbors are okay physically, but how is she doing stress wise. This type of behavior is everywhere unfortunately - and the drugs definitely make it worse.
Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

Times are sure scary. A lady I work with was raped in her home about three to four months ago. He walked in through the back door (she forgot to lock it) and raped her. Her dog warned her of someone in the house, but didn't do any good. Now last week there was a break in in another part of town where a lady was raped. It's all I can think about some nights when my husband is at work and I am at home with the baby. I keep a pistol on my nightstand with flashlight and shotgun in the closet.
Hope everyone stays safe.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'm glad you have a gun to keep you safe! I sleep with a gun next to my bed, too. I'm thankful I live in a country where I *can* have a firearm! I like knowing I can protect myself...I'm glad you can, too!

Very scary indeed! If you don't have an alarm system get yourself some fake signs to put in your yard and some stickers for your windows that state that you do. You can get them cheap on the net. A few beware of dog signs and a giant dogs water bowl on your front porch boasting the name Killer wouldn't hurt either. It just might deter any other punks from your property thinking that your not as easy a target as the neighbor.
I know I've been super nervous since our basement door was broken into a few weeks back, and we don't live in the city either.~~~

I agree with Lora88, you can not run away from it. You also can not 100% burglar proof your home because if they want in bad enough, they WILL get in.
That said, you can make it more difficult so they consider other houses (easier) besides yours. Here is a link with some tips to help deter the theives. How to Burglarproof Your Home | eHow.comRuss

Its so sad that this happens everywhere now. I remember when we was little my parents didn't even lock the doors. Now a days you can't do that anymore. I am glad no one was hurt.

When ex-dh and I were together, he worked out of state when I was pregnant with our first child. We lived in VT and he worked in WV and I saw him only a few times until he came home for paternity leave. I used to sleep with a loaded gun on the bookshelf headboard of our bed. Now that I live alone (with the kids) and I live in a place with more crime, I sometimes wish I had that gun still! There was a home invasion not far from here where an elderly woman was raped and beaten.

There have been a couple of robberies in our subdivision because it is seen as the rich one. There really is only one or two "rich" neighborhoods in the subdivision but it really doesn't matter to them. Since I am usually home alone during the day, I keep the doors locked in case I fall asleep. We have a beagle, but to be honest, he'd just lick you to death. He is good at alerting me to people being in the front yard, but an attack dog he is not. We have an alarm system and I make sure we use it. I'm usually the last one in bed so I make sure the doors are all locked. I need to work on locking the car doors though. I press the button on the way up the stairs before bed, but I have left them unlocked during the day after carrying in groceries.
