Hopefully they don't do that anymore! The article is from 2005, so I can only hope they have changed their ways.

I think people have to realize that some things not acceptable in your culture may be acceptable in others.

That being said, the culture that I was brought up in finds that pretty appauling. But I bet if you asked others that live on that particular island, they would find it common place and wouldn't be bothered by it.

I had seen this on Snopes awhile ago. If you click here, you'll see that Snopes originally felt it was probably a hoax but that some people on the island have heard of amateur fishermen doing it. They say that the dogs are not used as live bait, they're dogs that are found dead on the side of the road or culled from the stray population (which would mean they unfortunately are being killed to be used as bait).

I don't particularly like hearing of dogs being used as bait but I do also recognize that this world has many different cultures in it and that my western views would be seen as very odd in some places.

Since this was from National Geographic I'm feeling that this is a pretty reliable source of information.

It is true that there are other cultures that do not see the value in the life of certain animals, however, cruel is cruel no matter the culture.

I didn't click on the link, but I know from previous information that that happens, and not just on remote islands or in other cultures. For a long time, that was a standard method of "disposing" of greyhounds when their racing career was over. I think there are enough greyhound rescue organizations that it is probably much less common than it used to be, but I can't believe that it has stopped altogether.

When their lives no longer generate income on the racetrack, then it's acceptable to use the good that's left in their lives to generate more income by using them as live bait? Oh the greed of mankind. I just can't imagine the thought process behind such an act.
