    Default Dumb Injury!

So I was walking past a city bus today, and the wheel chair ramp was unfolding, and it hit my left hand across the back of my hand. My hand is really bruised, and I have apparently bruised the vein, so that any pressure involving the ligaments is really painful.

Everyone I know is telling me to hire a lawyer. Curious what y'all would do.

Knowing how I am, I would've screamed at the bus driver ASAP and gotten his info, bus # and lic plate and called head office to file a complaint. Go get your hand checked out to make sure its just bruising and nothing worse (with your ligaments). This way you'll have a record of this incident 'just in case'.

I hope your hand isn't hurt/damaged any further...can you keep it iced to keep the bruising/swelling down? Sorry this happened to you.

Lawyers are costly and time consuming. If your hand has more then just bruising, I'd consider it but for now....just get your hand/arm examined ASAP and keep notes on who your Dr is/was, which hospital you went and which tests you had done. Oh and file the complaint with the corp head office.

I wouldn't go the lawyer route, but I would file a complaint with the bus company.

It must be in the air, I swear. I whacked the back of my right hand a week ago and its a bruised mess right now.

    I hope you heal quick.

I would have gotten info just to have it. Sometimes injuries seem small and are more serious. Ex. my DD knee. I hope it's just a bruise. Did he at least apologise or was he oblivious.

I did stay onsite and a bus supervisor came and made a report. So I have that if anything gets worse. I feel like the lawyer route is more for serious, kind of "life changing" injuries.

I would not go the lawyer route. If you filed it with a bus supervisor then I would just follow up on it if you are still having problems from it in a few days. Give them a chance to help you instead of going over their heads.

I wouldn't do the lawyer thing either. I did something similiar while working at a bank years ago. I wacked my hand against a "portable teller station". Sounds silly, but it I must have hit it just right. My supervisor sent me to the walk in clinic to have it checked out. Turned out I busted some blood vessels and bruised the bone. Awful, ugly, and downright embarrasing.... but in the end, no harm was done.

    good luck

So sorry that happened to you. Please have it checked out by a physician if you haven't done so already. You're doing what I would do - and what I did when I fell at the grocery store. Please let us know what happens - it sounds sore and sensitive.

If you think you should go to the DR. call the bus supervisor and see what your options are. They may offer to pay for your visit without a lawyer.

My boss always had a saying "no matter what you are doing when lawyers get involved no on wins".

I hope it's just a bruise and you will be good to go soon.

    Good Luck!

IMHO it was your responsability to pay attention to where you were walking. The bus driver was doing his job to help a disabled passenger.

I think your friends have it backwards. They really should be talking about you going to a doctor before going to a lawyer.

Unless you have a serious injury that will change your life, and your ability to make a living going the legal route doesn't make sense. And if you are not that badly affected, why would you want to take money away from a tax funded service that helps people get around, reduces traffic, and helps the environment?

I hope you feel better soon, but I find the idea that we should hire a lawyer for everything offensive. That should be reserved when there was clear negligance and serious injury. This case most likely does not fit either category.

I wouldn't contact a lawyer, either but I would have it checked by a doctor. I would also send a written statement to the bus company so they are officially aware that they need to be more careful with their ramps. Hopefully, some retraining could avoid a worse incident and you could be the one to get the ball rolling.
